Men's Tennis Closes Weekend With 7-0 Loss Against Marquette
3/31/2019 2:19:00 PM | Men's Tennis
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 7-0 to BIG EAST foe Marquette on Sunday at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 7-9, including 1-2 against conference opponents, while the Golden Eagles improved to 11-6 (4-0 BIG EAST).
Marquette started Sunday's match with 6-3 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions for the first point of the day.
The Golden Eagles continued to control the match with straight-sets victories at the top three singles positions to clinch the dual.
Creighton forced third sets at each of the four through six positions. Jose Oscar Diaz (No. 4) battled back from a 6-1 first set loss for a 6-4 win in the second. Diaz competed in a third-set 10-point breaker and narrowly dropped a 10-8 decision. At the fifth position, Mac Mease rallied after a 6-1 setback for a 6-2 win in the second before falling in a tiebreaker during the third (7-6 [5]). During the No. 6 match, Daniel Lopez-Rey won 6-4 in the opening set, lost 6-2 in the second and was outlasted 10-8 in a 10-point tiebreaker.
"I thought both teams came out a bit flat in the doubles, but it had no effect on Marquette," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We need every ounce of energy to beat a team as talented as them, and we just didn't have it in doubles.
"Marquette played very well to start singles and then was able to hold off our surge at the end. We will learn from this match and be better next weekend.
Creighton concludes the regular season with a pair of home matches next weekend. The Bluejays will host North Dakota on Saturday before facing Illinois State on Sunday.
