OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory against North Dakota with four straight-sets singles victories on Saturday afternoon at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 8-9, while the Fighting Hawks dropped to 10-8.
Stratton Brown and Armando Gandini opened doubles play with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 position before North Dakota won 6-3 at each of the top two slots to claim the first point of the day.
Creighton turned the tides and took a 3-1 edge with victories at No. 5, 4 and 2 singles, in order. Mac Mease tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 for his team-leading 12th singles win. Jose Oscar Diaz continued the Bluejays' winning ways with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position. Brown added to Creighton's lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 2.
North Dakota knotted the match at 3-3 with straight-sets wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots.
Daniel Lopez-Rey secured the overall dual with a tiebreaker victory during the No. 6 singles position. Lopez-Rey won 6-2 in the opening set and outlasted his opponent in a tiebreaker to help Creighton earned its eighth team victory of the season.
"We started off a little slower and lacked some focus and energy in the doubles, but turned it up in singles," head coach Tom Lilly said. "I like the way we are competing in singles and we will need to get some better starts in doubles than our last two matches."
Creighton concludes its regular season on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Illinois State.
