Omaha, Neb. -- Some wildness on the bump came back to bite the Creighton baseball team on Saturday as the Bluejays fell to Kansas State 9-2 to even the series with the Wildcats on April 6.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 15-7 on the season, while Kansas State moved to 13-19.
Creighton starter Denson Hull ran into trouble in the third, walking four hitters in the frame. Wildcat leadoff hitter Dylan Phillips walked, but appeared to be thrown out at second trying to steal. The call, however, was overturned upon a K-State challenge. Phillips took third on a sacrifice, then a walk put Wildcats on the corners. Will Brennan laced an RBI single to left, then consecutive walks ended Hull's outing. Kansas State went on to plate four runs in the inning and another three in the fourth to take a 7-0 edge.
The Bluejays opened the fourth with consecutive singles from Jake Holton and Jack Strunc in the fourth. Creighton's next hitter, Jordan Hovey, was hit by a pitch by called back to the plate. The 1-0 pitch that hit Hovey was called a strike, leading to an ejection of Creighton assistant coach Connor Gandossy. The call was then challenged by Bluejay head coach Ed Servais and overturned, sending Hovey to first and loading the bases. Two outs later Will Hanafan got Creighton on the board with a two-run single up the middle.
Kansas State tacked on single runs sixth and eighth innings to even the series.
Wildcat starter Jordan Wicks earned the win (4-1) allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings, while Hull took the loss (0-3) giving up four runs on three hits and five walks in 2.1 innings.
The Bluejays closed the game with seven hits, led by a pair from Strunc.
Creighton and Kansas State will wrap up the three-game series with the rubber game on Sunday, April 7th at 12:00 pm.
