Baseball Claims Series Win Over K-State After Sunday Romp

Jays improve to 16-7 heading into Tuesday's tilt at Nebraska
OMAHA, Neb. -- Evan Johnson allowed just one hit in five shutout innings and Parker Upton scored four times while finishing a triple shy of the cycle as Creighton Baseball finished a series victory over Kansas State with an 11-1 win on Sunday, April 7.
Creighton improved to 5-2 at home and 16-7 overall, while Kansas State dropped to 13-20 on the season in Pete Hughes' first season with the Wildcats.
After Johnson retired K-State in order, Creighton wasted no time building an early lead. Singles by Isaac Collins and Upton preceded Will Robertson's two-run opposite field double. Robertson scored on Jake Holton's single that made it 3-0, and the Jays capped a six-hit frame when Jared Wegner singled home Jordan Hovey.
The lead grew to 6-0 in the second inning when Robertson lofted his fourth homer of the season with a majestic blast to right field that also brought home Upton.
Creighton also put up crooked numbers with two scores in both the fourth and fifth innings. Upton hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, and one inning later had an RBI double before coming around to score when Kansas State could not catch an infield pop-up.
Creighton tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Jackson Berney collected his first career hit with a single to left to plate Holton.
K-State's lone tally came in the seventh inning when Thomas Hughes singled with one out and scored on an RBI double to right center off the bat of Omaha native Dylan Phillips.
Johnson (4-0) lowered his season ERA to 3.48 with five scoreless innings to win his fourth straight start, striking out a career-high eight batters. John Sakowski, Jonah Smith, Ryan Connolly and Bobby Kametas each followed with an inning out of the bullpen for the Bluejays.
Six Creighton batters had multiple hits on the day, led by three each from Upton and Holton. Hovey, Wegner, Robertson and Jack Strunc each had a pair of base knocks for the Jays, with Robertson driving home a season-best four runs. Creighton's 17 hits were a season-high.
K-State's Jaxon Passino (1-4) lost his first start of the season after allowing six hits and four runs in one inning of work. The Wildcat offense managed just four hits on the afternoon.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday when it visits Nebraska for a 6:35 p.m. start that will be televised nationally on FS1.
