OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team closed the regular season with a 9-9 record following a 5-2 victory against Illinois State on Sunday at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays closed the regular season with two consecutive home wins as the team defeated North Dakota on Saturday.
Creighton gained an early 1-0 edge on Sunday with wins at the top two doubles positions to claim the first point. Nick Campbell and Mac Mease combined for a 6-1 win at the top position, while Joe Hoff and Stratton Brown also won 6-1 at the No. 2 slot.
Daniel Lopez-Rey started the singles results with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 before Illinois State earned its first win of the day with a straight-sets victory at the top position.
Mease improved to 13-4 during 2019 in singles play with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 as Creighton gained a 3-1 edge. The Redbirds tightened the dual with a straight-sets win at No. 3, but Hoff secured the win for the Bluejays with his first singles victory of the season. Hoff earned a closely contested 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 6 position for the fourth Creighton point.
Brown closed the day with a three-set win at No. 2. The Bluejay sophomore fell 7-5 in the first set but won 6-3 in the second and 10-5 during a third-set 10-point tiebreaker.
"This was a good weekend for our guys," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Beating two quality teams in very close matches shows how far we have come since last fall.
"We just fought hard all weekend and I'm proud of how we finished the regular season."
Creighton will take its late-season momentum into the 2019 BIG EAST Championships, which is slated to begin on April 19 in Cayce, South Carolina.
