Bluejays Post 11-0 Win over St. John's in Series Opener

Omaha, Neb. -- Taking advantage of nine walks and three errors, the Creighton Baseball team scored early and often in an 11-0 win over St. John's on Friday, May 10th.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 30-10 on the season and 10-3 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's moves to 26-20 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
Locked in a scoreless battle in the bottom of the third, the Bluejays seized control with three runs in the frame. Sophomore David Vilches drew a five pitch walk to get Creighton started, then sophomore Will Hanafan was hit by a pitch trying to lay down a bunt. Junior Isaac Collins followed with a sacrifice bunt that was thrown down the first base line. Both Vilches and Hanafan came in to score on the error, while Collins went to third. Following an RBI ground out off the bat of Will Robertson, Creighton was staked to a 3-0 edge.
The Bluejays continued to roll in the fourth, scoring three more times. Creighton's offense got rolling this time with one out as Hanafan and Collins each walked. With two down in the frame junior Jake Holton punched a double into right field off the glove of St. John's Brandon Miller to make it 5-0. After Holton took third on a passed ball, he came into score on an error by the right fielder to make it 6-0.
The Bluejay offense continued to stack on runs in the fifth, scoring five. A one-out single by freshman Jared Wegner got things going for the Jays, then walks to Vilches and Hanafan loaded the bases. An RBI walk to Collins made it 7-0, then Holton smashed a two-out grand slam to right to push Creighton's lead to 11-0.
Creighton ace Mitch Ragan cruised through six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and one walk to move to 7-2 on the year. Relievers Dylan Tebrake and Mitch Boyer tossed the final three frame to complete the shutout.Â
Holton guide the Creighton offense with three extra-base hits (two doubles and the home run) and a career-high six RBI.
St. John's starter Joe LaSorsa took the loss (4-5), allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks.
The Bluejays and Red Storm resume the three game series on Saturday, May 11th at 6:30 pm.
