Bethesda, Md. -- After lightning and rain forced the suspension of the second game of Friday's doubleheader with Georgetown with Creighton up 9-0, the Bluejay bats picked up right where they off on Saturday as Creighton wrapped up a 14-2 win.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 28-10 on the season and 8-3 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown fell to 17-29 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
Creighton jumped out early on the BIG EAST reigning pitcher of the Week, Georgetown's Nick Morreale, scoring a pair of runs after the first two were retired. Junior Jake Holton blasted a double to center, then junior Parker Upton drew a walk. Senior Jordan Hovey ripped a two-run double to left to plate both Bluejays.
After flawless frame from Bluejay starter Denson Hull in the first, the Creighton offense went back to work. Sophomore Garrett Gilbert opened the frame with his second home run in as many games, then sophomore Will Hanafan was hit by a pitch. Before the inning came to a close, Holton delivered an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0.
After both teams put up zeros in the third, Creighton plated five runs on two hits. A pair of walks to Hanafan and leadoff man Isaac Collins set the table, then junior Will Robertson crushed a ball over the wall in straight away center to make it 7-0. The Bluejays tacked on two more runs before the inning was over on sacrifice flys from Hovey and senior Jack Strunc.
Hull continued to cruise on the mound, delivering flawless frames frames in the fourth and fifth. Hull did not return when play resumed on Saturday, but picked up his fifth consecutive win to move to 5-3 on the season. Hull allowed just one hit in five innings of work.
Georgetown starter Morreale took the loss (4-3), allowing nine runs (seven earned) on six hits and five walks in four innings.
Once play resume on Saturday, Creighton continued to rake at the plate, with a double from Robertson to open Saturday. The Bluejay right fielder eventually scored on an error to make it 10-0. Creighton added single runs in the seventh and eighth, then plated two in the ninth. Robertson drove in the Bluejays' run in the seventh with an RBI single, while a sac fly off the bat of freshman Andrew Meggs accounted for the run in the eighth.
Creighton's two ninth inning runs came via a two-run single from Hovey, plating Holton and Upton.
Georgetown's two runs came in the seventh on a two-run homer from A.J. Lotsis.
Ben Dotzler tossed three innings of relief for Creighton on Saturday, while Mitch Boyer worked a flawless ninth.
Offensively the Bluejays finished with 14 hits, led by four from Holton (4-for-6), three from Robertson (3-for-6 with four RBI) and a 2-for-5, five RBI day by Hovey.
The two teams are playing the series finale right now.
