Men's Soccer Starts Opening Road Weekend With 2-2 Draw Against #6 North Carolina

Yudai Tashiro and Dominic Briggs each scored for the Bluejays
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Creighton men's soccer team opened the Johnny Torres era and its 2019 regular season with a 2-2 double overtime draw against No. 6 North Carolina on Friday night during the Carolina Nike Classic at UNC's new on-campus stadium.
Both the Bluejays and Tar Heels moved to 0-0-1.
Creighton led 2-0 at the half before North Carolina recorded a pair of second-half goals for the final result.
Yudai Tashiro opened the scoring during the 18th minute. Tashiro lined up a free kick from about 25 yards in front of the goal and promptly launched the ball into the top left corner of the net and gave Creighton a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays added to their lead during the 31st minute. Ziyad Fares received a pass from Luke Haakenson about 30 yards from the endline before Fares sprinted down the left-side of the 18-yard box. The senior crossed the ball the towards the far post where Dominic Briggs one-touched the ball inside the right post and past the North Carolina goalkeeper for his first career goal.
Paul Kruse tallied three saves during the first half to preserve Creighton's 2-0 edge.
North Carolina All-American Mauricio Pineda cut Creighton's lead in half with a goal during the 52nd minute. Pineda recovered a loose ball in the box before sending it into the back of the net.
The Tar Heels found the equalizer during the 68th minute. Alex Rose headed in a cross from inside the six-yard box to tie the match at 2-2.
Daniel Espeleta had Creighton's last opportunity during regulation with less than two minutes remaining. The sophomore sent a shot towards the goal from about 15 yards out that went off the right corner of the woodwork.
North Carolina produced a pair of dangerous chances to open the first overtime period, but one shot went wide to the left and Kruse recorded a leaping save on the second attempt.
Tashiro tallied the lone shot during the second overtime. The senior midfielder fired a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a North Carolina defender.
The Tar Heels held a 16-7 edge in shots to end the match, including 9-4 on goal. Kruse, the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, finished the night with seven saves.
Friday marked the fourth consecutive time and sixth in the past seven seasons in which Creighton opened the year against a team ranked inside the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25. The Bluejays are now 4-1-1 during those matches.
Creighton continues its early season road trip with a match on Sunday evening at No. 4 Wake Forest. First touch between the Bluejays and Demon Deacons is scheduled for 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
