Bluejay Women's Soccer Opens BIG EAST Action with 2-0 Win Over DePaul

Omaha, Neb. – The Creighton women's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over DePaul on Saturday, Sept 28, the Bluejays' first result over the Blue Demons in seven meetings.
Creighton improved to 7-3-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons fell to 3-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
Posting her third shutout of the season, Bluejays' netminder Katie Sullivan was tested from the virtually the opening kickoff. DePaul's Gwen Walker fired a shot off the crossbar in the second minute of play. The rebound found its way to Blue Demon Jade Eriksen-Russo, who delivered a shot on goal but was denied by Sullivan.
Creighton responded in the 22nd minute, behind talented freshman Skylar Heinrich. The Omaha native found some space on a pass from sophomore Ansley Atkinson, racing to the center of the box. DePaul goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson met Heinrich head on, attempting to tackle the ball. Heinrich maintained her balance, collected the loose ball and slid the Bluejays second shot of the match into the back of net for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the opening half, senior Taryn Jakubowski denied DePaul's best scoring opportunity, coming in the 27th minute. Blue Demon Sydney Parker beat Sullivan off a set corner play, sending the shot to the right side of the net. Jakubowski, however, was there for the defensive save to preserve Creighton's 1-0 advantage.
The game remained 1-0 into halftime, but DePaul came out firing in the second half. The Blue Demons fired off 13 shots and forcing Sullivan to collect six of her seven saves on the day.
Despite DePaul's pressure on Sullivan, the Illinois native proved equal to every challenge.
The Bluejays' took a bit of stress off their goalkeeper in the 78th minute as senior Kylin Grubb extended their lead to 2-0. The Missouri native fired off a shot at the top of the box but was denied by a DePaul defender. She retrieved the blocked attempt, then beat Eriksson for her second goal of the season.
The Bluejays tallied six less shots than DePaul in the match, (20-14), while holding a 5-2 advantage on corners.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 3, traveling to Xavier. First touch between the Bluejays and the Musketeers is set for 6:00 pm.
