Softball Drops Pair of Games On Saturday At Coach B Classic

Bluejays fell to Southern Illinois, 4-3, and Murray State, 10-2
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Creighton softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday at the Coach B Classic in Carbondale, Illinois. The Bluejays lost 4-3 against Southern Illinois before falling 10-2 to Murray State.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 8-7.
Creighton outhit Southern Illinois 8-5, but the Bluejays left seven on base and managed only single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Kiele Miller pitched the entirety of the contest and recorded 11 strikeouts for her third double-digit strikeout game of the season. The junior also became the seventh pitcher in Creighton program history to reach 300 career strikeouts with her third of the game in the first inning.
After falling behind 1-0 after a solo home run in the bottom of the second, Mileah McKelvy recorded an RBI double of the left-field wall and drove in Kaitlynn Hunt to tie the game at 1-1.
The Bluejays took the lead with a run in the top of the fourth. Mikaela Pechar led off the inning with a double to right field before Kiara Mills tallied a sacrifice bunt to move pinch-runner Brittney Manthie to third base. Sam Alm drove in the go-ahead run with a safety squeeze. The sophomore delivered on a 2-2 count and laid a bunt down the first-base line as Manthie scored easily and the Salukis' only play was at first base.
Southern Illinois regained the lead with a three-run homer during the bottom of the fourth.
Creighton tallied its third and final run of the game during the top of the fifth inning. Cayla Nielsen and McKelvy each singled to left field with two outs before Kailey Wilson hit a single off the center-field wall to drive in Nielsen and trim the deficit to a single run.
Mills led off the top of the sixth with a single and Ashley Cantu reached on an error to open the seventh, but neither scored.
Mills finished 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt, while McKelvy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Nielsen went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Bluejays fell behind 9-0 against Murray State in the nightcap before scoring twice in the fourth inning.
The Racers hit a three-run home run in the first, scored a pair of unearned runs in the third and hit a grand slam in the fourth to open up a nine-run edge.
Pecher hit her second home run of the season to drive in Creighton's pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. McKelvy singled and Wilson reached on a fielder's choice before Pechar lifted an 0-1 pitch over the right-center field wall for a two-run homer and the Bluejays' first home run since Feb. 9 against Incarnate Word.
Creighton managed only three hits and drew just one walk against Murray State.
Haley Gatica and Kate Mullally split the pitching for the Bluejays as Gatica allowed five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings and Mullally gave up a pair of earned runs in 3 1/3.
Creighton concludes play in the Coach B Classic with a contest on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. against Northern Kentucky.
