Men's Tennis Outlasted By Nebraska-Omaha In Marathon Match
2/7/2020 11:30:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Friday night's match lasted three and a half hours
The Bluejays moved to 1-3, while the Mavericks improved to 1-3.
Creighton opened the night by earning the doubles point. The Bluejays dropped the No. 2 doubles match before winning at the other two positions. Joe Hoff and Stratton Brown combined for a 6-3 win at No. 3, while Mac Mease and Nick Campbell needed a tiebreaker to clinch the first point of the match, as the Creighton duo picked up a 7-3 victory in the tiebreaker at the top position.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 3-1 edge after victories by both Campbell and Mease during singles play. Campbell won in straight-sets, 6-1, 7-5, at the top slot and Mease claimed a victory at No. 5 with a three-set win (6-1, 3-6, 6-3).
The Mavericks closed the gap to one with a three-set victory at No. 2. Brown earned a 6-2 win in the first set but fell 6-4 in the second. The third set went all the way to a tiebreaker before UNO earned the win.
The No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches also went three sets. Jose Oscar Diaz fell in his first set at No. 4, 7-5 but bounced back for 7-6 win in the second. Diaz cramped up during the third set and could not finish after trailing 3-0. The Mavericks clinched the overall dual with a victory at the No. 6 position. UNO took the first set 6-4, but Daniel Lopez-Rey won 6-2 in the second. The Mavericks ended the match with a 7-5 victory in the third and deciding set.
"This was a very tough lost because of how it happened," head coach Tom Lilly said. "UNO has a strong team, so there is not shame in that, but we had so many opportunities to win it and just weren't able to close things out in a few spots. Both Nick and Mac had big wins and our doubles was solid. We need to get over this for next week's home match against DePaul."
The Bluejays are back in action against DePaul on Feb. 14 in Omaha at noon.
