Bluejays scored three goals in less than five minutes during the first half
OMAHA, Neb. -- Seven different players recorded a point as the Creighton men's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 shutout of UIC on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 3-4-1, while the Flames moved their record to 5-3-2.
Creighton scored three goals over the span of less than five minutes to take control of the match.Â
Senior Musa Qongo recorded his first goal as a Bluejay to open the scoring during the 18th minute. The co-captain received a pass from Callum Watson before blasting a shot off the bottom of the cross bar and into the back of the net.Â
Manu Toledano extended Creighton's edge with a goal off a corner kick in the 20th minute. Diego Gutierrez sent in a corner from the far side of the field towards the middle of the box where Toledano headed the ball into the ground before it bounced up and over the goalkeeper.Â
The third goal of the first-half onslaught came from the foot of Gutierrez during the 23rd minute. Jackson Castro placed a pass towards the right edge of the box where Gutierrez took a couple of dribbles before sending the ball into the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Bluejays held an 11-3 edge in shots before the halftime break.
Creighton continued to control possession during the second half and outshot UIC by a 9-1 margin.
The Bluejays tallied their fourth goal of the night during the 61st minute as Alejandro Maillet converted his first goal of the season. The senior sent a shot towards goal that deflected off a Flames defender before crossing the end line. Owen O'Malley earned an assist on the play.
Senior goalie Paul Kruse and sophomore Nathan Schnur split time in goal for the combined shutout on Saturday night. Neither net minder needed to make a save as UIC did not record a shot on goal during the run of play.
Coupled with a 1-0 shutout of UNO on Wednesday night, the Bluejays recorded consecutive clean sheets for the first time since September of 2018 when Creighton tallied three straight shutouts from Sept. 7-22.Â
The Bluejays resume BIG EAST play with a road match on Wednesday afternoon in Chicago as Creighton matches up against DePaul. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Blue Demons is scheduled for 1 p.m.
