Senior Nate Vontz earns 13-shot victory after rounds of 63, 69 and 65
ELKHORN, Neb. -- The Creighton men's golf team earned a 25-shot victory and Nate Vontz picked up a 13-shot victory in a dominating performance at Stampede At The Creek, which wrapped up on Tuesday in Elkhorn.
A senior from Lincoln, Vontz obliterated the previous Bluejay record for an 18-hole score as well as a 54-hole score, en route to becoming the first Creighton player to win a tournament with more than 40 competitors since Kade Brown won the 2016 Jackrabbit Invitational. Vontz was 1-under through the midpoint of his initial round on Monday before firing a 28 on the back nine, including back-to-back eagles. His 63 was two shots better than the previous low round in program history, a 65 by John Sutko, done in 2007 at the Treasure Coast Classic. Vontz followed that up with a 69 on Monday afternoon before closing with a 7-under 65 on Tuesday to cement his first collegiate victory in his 100th round as a Bluejay. Vontz's 197 total was seven shots better than the previous CU record for a 54-hole event of 204 by Sutko from 2007 at the Treasure Coast Classic.
Vontz lowered his season scoring average to 70.44 through nine rounds this fall, and 74.66 overall in his career.
Creighton junior Cade McCallum secured his first top-five finish in his 12th career event, finishing as runner-up to Vontz with loops of 69, 68 and 73 for a 210 total. His second-round 68 was the lowest score of his Bluejay career, and his 210 aggregate has only been surpassed previously by four individuals in program history (Vontz, Sutko, Kade Brown and Matt Kouri).
Sophomore Charlie Zielinski collected his second top-five finish of the fall following scores of 73, 70 and 71 for a 214 total to share fifth place. He has now shot in the 70s (or better) in all 30 career rounds at the collegiate level.
Sophomore Jack Olson authored the best scores of his collegiate career with circuits of 70, 72 and 74. His 70 was a career-low, as was his 216 total. That was good for a tie for ninth place in the field of 42 competitors.
Jackson Thompson tied for 21st place with scores of 73, 78 and 73 for a 224 total. His bookend 73s matched his season low for the fall.
Playing as individuals and not counting towards CU's team scores were sophomore Jake Kluver (76-73-77=226) and freshman Owen Mackin (75-78-74=227). Kluver placed 26th overall while Mackin finished in a tie for 27th in his Creighton debut.

Creighton topped the field of six teams with an 836 total, easily the best 54-hole performance in school history, to deliver Judd Cornell his first victory as a head coach. CU posted rounds of 275 and 279 on Monday before a 282 on Tuesday. the Jays had never previously owned an 18-hole score better than a 281 in 2007 at the Treasure Coast Classic. St. Thomas finished as a distant runner-up with an 861 total on the par-72 Club at Indian Creek course that measured 7,242 yards.
Creighton is back in action next Monday when it wraps up its fall season with the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate in Jonesboro, Ark.
