Scouting Creighton (1-0-0)
The Bluejays opened the 2021 spring season with a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Marquette on Saturday to pick up the first three points of the league season.
Jake Ronneberg scored the game-winning goal during the 105th minute and Charles Auguste had the first goal of the year.
Owen O'Malley and Diego Gutierrez each tallied assists during the season lid lifter.
Creighton was picked second in the Midwest Division of the BIG EAST Preseason Polls and junior goalkeeper Paul Kruse earned Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year accolades.
Head coach Johnny Torres is in his second year at the helm of the Bluejays after spending 12 years as an assistant coach.
Scouting Nebraska-Omaha (0-1-0)
The Mavericks enter Saturday after playing their season opener on Monday afternoon at Kansas City.
UNO scored the first goal of the match before giving up the next three, including two during the second half to fall 3-1 against the Roos.
Hugo Kametani scored the Mavericks' goal.
UNO was picked third in the Summit League Preseason Poll while Stevie Siy and Nil Ayats were each named on the league's Preseason Players to Watch list.
The Mavericks welcomed back 15 players (four starters) from last season's team, which went 4-9-4 overall, and added 13 newcomers.
Head coach Bob Warming is in his third season at the helm of the Mavericks.
Series History Against Mavericks
Creighton leads the all-time series against UNO, 6-3-1.
The Bluejays are 2-0-1 against the Mavericks since UNO became a Division I program,, including 1-0 at Caniglia Field (1-0 W, 9/26/17).
Torres-Warming Connection
A 2011 Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Bob Warming, who is in his third season as head coach at UNO, coached at Creighton from 1990-94 and 2001-09 and is the Bluejays' winningest head coach with 190 victories.
Warming coached current Creighton head coach Johnny Torres one season (1994) and had Torres on his coaching staff for three seasons (2007-09).
The Bluejays went 15-5-1 in 1994 and went 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament, losing to top-ranked Indiana.
From 2007 through 2009, Creighton compiled a 3-2 NCAA Tournament record and finished 35-9-12 overall. Warming and Torres were part of the Missouri Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year in 2008.
Last Time Out
Sophomore Jake Ronneberg converted the golden goal in the 105th minute of the second overtime as the Creighton men's soccer team started the 2021 spring season with a 2-1 BIG EAST victory over Marquette on Saturday evening inside the Valley Fields dome in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The match marked Creighton's first competition since a loss on Nov. 9, 2019 to Butler in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.
Both of the Bluejays' goal came following corner kicks. During the 105th minute Diego Gutierrez played a short service from the corner and made a move on a defender before sending the ball towards the six-yard box. Duncan McGuire swung over the ball to make his opponent bite before the ball found the foot of Ronneberg for his first career goal as a Bluejay.
Creighton opened the scoring during the 51st minute. Charles Auguste slotted the ball into the back of the net after a centering pass from Owen O'Malley following a couple of short passes off a corner kick.
Marquette tied the match at 1-1 with a goal from Lukas Sunesson in the 65th minute.
The Bluejays ended the match with an 18-9 edge in shots, including 9-4 on goal.
Freshman Nathan Schnur recorded two saves and tallied the goalkeeping victory during his first start as a Bluejay.
Schnur Named BE Goalkeeper of Week
Freshman goalkeeper Nathan Schnur earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Schnur recorded the victory during his Bluejay debut on Saturday evening as Creighton opened the 2021 spring season with a 2-1 double-overtime win at Marquette to notch three points in the Midwest Division league standings.
The freshman made two saves and played all 105 minutes. Schnur became the second Creighton freshman goalkeeper in the past three seasons to tally a victory in the season opener (Paul Kruse, 2018 vs. No. 11 Clemson).
The Evergreen, Colorado native spent two seasons as captain of the Barca Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona and helped lead his club to the 2018-19 USSDA Western Conference champions as well as the 2017-18 Arizona State championship.
College Soccer News Recognizes Ronneberg
Sophomore Jake Ronneberg earned a spot on the College Soccer News Men's Team of the Week following his golden goal in the season-opener against Marquette.
The goal marked Ronneberg's first points as a Bluejay.
The Naperville, Illinois native also claimed a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
New Faces Around The Pitch
Creighton's starting XI on Saturday against Marquette featured six players making their first start in a Bluejay uniform.
In total, eight players made their Creighton debuts against the Golden Eagles.
Nathan Schnur, Duncan McGuire, Landon Sloan, Alejandro Maillet, Owen O'Malley, Mark O'Neill, Diego Gutierrez and Callum Watson each made their Bluejay debuts during the season opener.
Goals Off Corner Kicks
Both of Creighton's goals against Marquette were direct results of corner kicks.
The Bluejays had a total of five goals off corner kicks in 2019.
Nico Engelking and Charles Auguste each scored off corners against Columbia (Sept. 9, 2019).
Tor Trosten found the back of the net following a scramble after a corner kick against UNO (Sept. 16, 2019).
Both Yudai Tashiro and Jake Ashford scored on set pieces on corner kicks against Butler (Nov. 2, 2019).
