Men's Golf Takes Ninth at GCU Invitational As Vontz Goes Low

Nate Vontz opens with first round 66
PHOENIX, Ariz., -- Led by an opening round 66 from Nate Vontz, the Creighton men's golf team tied for ninth place at the GCU Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix.
Vontz fired seven birdies in Monday's first round and shot a 66Â to lead the 94-player field after 18 holes. His 66 was the best round of his collegiate career, and CU's best individual round since Ben Krapfl also shot a 66 on Sept. 24, 2018 at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational. Vontz had subsequent rounds of 75 and 74 to tie for 11th place overall with a 2-over par total of 215.
CU's next two best finishers were both freshmen. Jackson Thompson tied for 46th place with scores of 75, 76 and 71 for a 222 total, and Charlie Zielinski tied for 56th with a 223 total following loops of 73, 74 and 76.
Also tying for 56th place was sophomore Cade McCallum. He opened with a pair of 74s before closing with a 75.
Brandt Radloff rounded out CU's performers with a tie for 80th place after circuits of 76, 73 and 81 for a 230 total. His second round 73 was CU's best score of the second round.
Jake Kluver competed as an individual and tied for 86th place with rounds of 73, 79 and 80 for 232 total overall.
The tournament featured 16 teams and 94 players. It was held on the GCU Championship Golf Course, a par 71 layout that measured 7,176 yards on Monday and 7,207 yards for Tuesday's final round. Wichita State won the team title with a 862 total, and Grand Canyon's Michael Salazar won the individual title with a 207 aggregate.
Creighton returns to the course for the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield, Mo., on March 22-23.
