Bluejays claimed a 2-1 win in the first game of the home season
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team split a doubleheader against UConn on Saturday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex during the Bluejays' first home games since May of 2019. Creighton opened the day with a 2-1 win before falling 9-1.
The Bluejays moved to 3-2 in BIG EAST play and 7-6 overall, while the Huskies pushed their season record to 8-10 overall and 1-1 during league action.
Parker Boyd allowed just three hits and one run during a complete-game effort, and the Creighton offense recorded a home run and RBI double during Saturday's first game.
Boyd recorded eight strikeouts and allowed only five base runners for her fifth victory of the season.
Creighton broke a 0-0 tie with a two-out home run from Kiara Mills in the bottom of the fourth. Mills launched the first pitch she saw over the left-center field wall for her first homer of the season and pushed the Bluejays ahead 1-0.
After Boyd worked around a walk and single in the top of the fifth by striking out the final hitter of the inning, Creighton scored its second run of the game with two hits in the bottom of the fifth. Victoria Alvarez led off the home half of the frame with a single through the left side, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a ground-rule double by Cayla Nielsen.
The Huskies cut the Bluejays' lead in half with a lead-off home run in the top of the seventh. Boyd settled in after the homer with two pop outs and a strikeout to end the game.
Four of Creighton's five hits in the opening game were of the extra-base variety as Nielsen, Alm and Pechar each had doubles to go along with Mills' home run.
UConn scored nine runs on 11 hits, including four home runs, during the second game of the day.
The Huskies opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the second.
Madeline Vejvoda countered in the bottom of the second with her second home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1.Â
With two outs and two on in the top of the third, Devon Casazza delivered a go-ahead three-run homer, her second long ball in as many innings for UConn.
Creighton did not put a runner on base during the third through fifth innings as the Huskies added to their lead with back-to-back home runs in the fifth and steal of home in the sixth. UConn had runners on the corner in the sixth before the runner at first took off for second on a delayed steal. As the runner forced a rundown between first and second base, the Husky runner from third base raced towards home and slid in past a tag attempt at the plate for the seventh UConn run of the game.
Kailey Wilson led off the sixth with a single down the right-field line for the first Bluejay hit since the second inning but a double play and ground out ended the threat.
The Huskies added two additional runs in the top of the seventh before Creighton went down in order in the last of the final inning.
Wilson led the Bluejays with two hits in the second game. Mikayla Santa Cruz pitched 5 2/3 innings before Kate Mullally pitched the final 1 1/3.Â
Creighton and UConn conclude their three-game series on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
