Softball Records Walk-Off Win Against NKU, Splits During Day Two Of Saluki Invitational

Kailey Wilson delivered a walk-off two-run homer against NKU
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Creighton softball team recorded a walk-off victory over Northern Kentucky, 4-3, before falling to Southern Illinois, 5-3, on Saturday during the second day of the Saluki Invitational.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 3-4 with Saturday's split.
Kailey Wilson delivered the heroics with a two-run homer to end the first game of the day. With one on and one out in the bottom of the seventh and the Bluejays trailing 3-2, the Colorado native launched a 2-1 delivery over the left-field wall.Â
Northern Kentucky led 2-0 after its first two trips to the plate before Creighton tied the game in the bottom of the second. The Bluejays put runners at second and third with two outs before calling on pinch-hitter Alyssa Gappa. The freshman responded by recording a single through the left side to drive in Victoria Alvarez. Ashley Cantu followed Gappa with a single through the right side to send home Cayla Nielsen and tie the game at 2-2.
The Norse regained the lead with a run in the top of the third with a single, sacrifice bunt and error.
Creighton left four runners on base in the fourth through sixth innings while Bluejay starting pitcher Jena Lawrence retired 11 of the next 12 hitters after the third-inning error.
NKU threatened in the top of the seventh by loading the bases without a hit. Parker Boyd came in to relieve Lawrence with one out in the seventh and stranded runners at each base with a strikeout and fly out.
The Bluejays recorded 10 hits against the Norse as Cantu and Nielsen each had three.Â
Creighton jumped out to an early 2-0 edge against host Southern Illinois before falling by two runs.
Cantu and Wilson each singled in the top of the first inning before Sam Alm drove in both runners with a base hit into right field.Â
The Salukis tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second inning.Â
The Bluejays put one runner on base during the third through fifth innings as SIU scored once during each of those frames to push the score to 5-2 in favor of the home team.
Creighton started a rally in the top of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Courtney Sandell and Cantu each singled before Wilson singled to right-center field to drive in Brittney Manthie for the Bluejays' third run. Southern Illinois escaped the threat with a strikeout and ground out to end the game.
The Salukis recorded their 21st consecutive win dating back to last season -- 12-0 this season.Â
The Bluejays duplicated their hit output in the second game with an even 10. Cantu led the way with three, while Wilson, Alm and Kiara Mills each had two.Â
Cantu went a combined 6-for-8 with two runs scored on Saturday, while Wilson drove in a team-high three runs combined.
Creighton concludes its trip to Carbondale, Illinois with its fifth game of the weekend on Sunday morning as the Bluejays are scheduled to face UIC at 10 a.m.
