Scouting Creighton (7-7, 3-3 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays opened their home schedule with a 1-2 showing against UConn and scored a total eight runs during three games, March 20-21.
Creighton ranks second in the BIG EAST with a .288 team batting average, led by fifth-year senior Ashley Cantu. Cantu leads the conference with a .500 average and is sixth in the league with 22 hits.
Kailey Wilson leads the Bluejays and is tied for seventh in the conference with four home runs and 13 RBIs, while ranking ninth in the BIG EAST with a .370 batting average.
Parker Boyd leads the Creighton pitching staff with 47 1/3 innings pitched and a 4.29 ERA. The graduate transfer owns 41 strikeouts (8th in BIG EAST) including 17 looking, which ranks second the conference.
Mikayla Santa Cruz has pitched 26 innings and claims a 4.58 ERA.
Bluejays pitchers have combined for a 4.61 ERA and 75 strikeouts during 88 innings of work.
Creighton returned 17 letterwinners from 2020 and welcomed six newcomers, including five freshman and one graduate transfer.
Head coach Brent Vigness is in his 28th season at the helm of the Bluejays and owns 797 wins at Creighton, the most by any head coach across all of Creighton athletics.
Scouting Seton Hall (6-12, 2-4 BIG EAST)
The Pirates head to Omaha after a 6-2 win against Hofstra on Wednesday afternoon.
Seton Hall has not played a league game since March 21.
The Pirates enter the weekend 2-4 during BIG EAST play, with all four losses coming by two runs or less.
Kiana Tate leads Seton Hall during league action with eight hits, while Hailey Arteaga, a 2019 All-BIG EAST selection, paces the squad with four runs and six RBIs in conference games. Darby Pandolfo paces the team with a .478 on-base percentage (six hits, five walks) and .588 slugging percentage (four doubles) in BIG EAST games.
Pandolfo also leads the team during all games with 18 hits (.360 average), six doubles, two home runs, 11 RBIs and 11 walks.
The Pirates rank fifth in the BIG EAST with a .271 batting average during 18 overall games and averages 4.2 runs per game.
Kelsey Carr and Shelby Smith have combined to strikeout 42 batters during 42 innings of conference action and walked only 18 to lead the pitching staff.
Smith, a left-handed pitcher, owns a 2.83 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings, while Carr (right-handed) has tossed 24 innings and struck out 21 with a 3.79 ERA.
For the entire season, Carr owns a team-low 4.31 ERA and Seton Hall-best 46 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings, while Smith has 43 strikeouts in 39 innings and a 4.67 ERA.
Head coach Paige Smith is in her ninth season at the helm of the Pirates.
Series History Against Pirates
Creighton leads the all-time series against Seton Hall, 10-7.
The Bluejays and Pirates closed the 2019 season with a three-game series in Omaha.
Seton Hall took both games of a doubleheader on March 4, 2019 before Creighton claimed a 9-7 win during the final game of the weekend a day lateras both teams combined for seven home runs in the season finale.
Last Time Out
Creighton opened its home schedule with a three-game series against UConn, March 20-21.
The Bluejays won the opening game of the weekend 2-1, but dropped the final two by scores of 9-1 and 10-5.
Creighton managed only 15 hits during the three contests.
UConn hit eight home runs during the weekend, including a pair of three-run long balls in the series finale on March 21.
Vigness Nearing 800 Creighton Wins
Head coach Brent Vigness owns a 797-603-3 record at the helm of the Bluejays and needs only three wins to become the first Creighton athletics head coach to reach 800 wins.
He earned his 700th win at Creighton on March 10, 2016 against South Dakota State.
Vigness is one of five active Creighton coaches with more than 350 wins as a Bluejay head coach.
A Central College (Iowa) grad, Vigness took over for the Bluejays prior to the 1994 season after spending five years as head coach at Assumption College in Worchester, Massachusetts.

Cantu Reaches 200-Hit Plateau
Fifth-year senior outfielder Ashley Cantu reached the 200-hit plateau on March 12 against Providence.
The Frisco, Texas native recorded her 200th hit with an infield single during the top of the seventh inning in the second game of a doubleheader against the Friars.
Cantu became the ninth player in program history to record 200 or more hits.
She earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor after leading the Bluejays with five hits and four runs scored against Providence.
Creighton At Home
Since joining the BIG EAST in 2014, the Bluejays own a 45-43 record at home.
Creighton's last home game before the 2021 home-opening weekend against UConn on March 20-21, 2020 was on May 5, 2019 against Seton Hall to close out the 2019 season. The Bluejays did not play a home game last season because of the season ending on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Creighton posted 13 wins at home in 2018, the most in a single season since claiming 19 home victories in 2008.
The Bluejays are scheduled to play 16 games at the Creighton Sports Complex this season.
