Bluejays scored winning run on an errors with two outs during their last at bat
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team completed a three-game sweep of Seton Hall with a 6-5 walk-off win on Saturday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex. The victory also marked head coach Brent Vigness's 800th win at Creighton.
The Bluejays improved to 10-7 overall this season and 6-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates fell to 6-15 overall and 2-7 during league action.
With the bases loaded, two outs and the score tied 5-5 in the last of the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Emma Rosonke sent a ground ball to the left side of the infield. The Seton Hall short stop attempted to field the ball but mishandled it, which allowed Brittney Manthie to cross home plate for the winning run and Rosonke to reach before the rest of her Bluejay teammates headed to celebrate with Rosonke at first base.Â
Madeline Vejvoda led the Creighton offense going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk.
Vejvoda opened the scoring with a two-RBI single to right field in the bottom of the third. The Bluejay third baseman drove in Cayla Nielsen and Mikayla Paulson as Creighton built a 2-0 edge. Following a Seton Hall pitching change, Mikaela Pechar sent home the third Bluejay run in the third with a fielder's choice to the short stop. The Pirates recorded an out at second base, but Kiara Mills crossed home and gave Creighton a 3-0 lead.
Seton Hall quickly tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. An RBI double by Baylee Allender on a sinking line drive into left field and a two-run homer over the left-field wall by Jaden Tate knotted the game at 3-3.
Creighton put one runner on base in the bottom of the fourth but did not score, and relief pitcher Mikayla Santa Cruz worked around a pair of walks to keep the score tied heading to the home half of the fifth inning.
Sam Alm started the Bluejays' portion of the fifth with a double to right field and reached third on a ground out. Vejvoda collected her third RBI with a perfectly placed bunt single. The La Vista, Nebraska native bunted the ball towards the third-base line before the Pirate pitcher fielded it but did not have a play at home or first base. Pinch-runner Jacey Sawyer stole second and advanced to third after the catcher's throw hit the second base and ricocheted into short right field. Victoria Alvarez drove in Sawyer with a single to center field and gave Creighton a 5-3 lead.
Seton Hall countered with two runs in the top of the sixth with three hits, including an RBI single down the left-field line. The Pirates tied the game with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
Creighton left two on base during the bottom of the sixth inning and Seton Hall left one on in the next half, setting the stage for the Bluejays' walk-off in the last of the seventh.
Alvarez and Manthie each drew one-out walks before a fielder's choice put runners at the first and second with two outs. Pinch-hitter Courtney Sandell sent a ground ball towards the left side of the infield before the Seton Hall third baseman fielded the ball and attempted to tag out Manthie running from second to third, but Manthie avoided the tag as the Bluejays loaded the bases. Rosonke, in her third pinch-hit appearance of the season, watched a strike, fouled a pair of pitches off and took a ball before producing the game-winning run by sending the ball towards the left side of the infield where the Pirate shortstop mishandled it and did not have a play at any base.
Santa Cruz recorded the victory with three innings of relief.Â
The Bluejays tallied 11 hits, marking the seventh time this season the team reached the 10-hit plateau. Creighton also moved into third place in the BIG EAST standings with the series sweep, behind DePaul and Villanova who are both undefeated.Â
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday for a midweek nonconference matchup against South Dakota State. First pitch between the Bluejay and Jackrabbits is scheduled for 3 p.m.
