Women's Soccer Looks for Second Win of the Weekend Against Drake on Sunday

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton's women's soccer team returns to the pitch on Sunday, August 22 to face former MVC rival Drake at 1:00 pm. The Bluejays will be looking to earn their second victory of the weekend after besting Montana 2-1 (2ot) on Thursday.

Bluejays and Bulldogs Both Went the Distance on Thursday
In the first match of the season, both Creighton and Drake went beyond 90 minutes as the Bluejays posted a 2-1 win over Montana in the 110th minute. Drake, meanwhile, battled Kansas to a 0-0 draw in Lawrence, Kansas.
As much as anything, the match on Sunday will be about depth and recovery.
Former Missouri Valley Conference foes, Sunday's matchup will be the first meeting between Drake and Creighton since 2017.
Bluejays in Season Openers
Creighton moved to 17-14-2 mark in season openers all-time and are 20-9-4 in its first home match of the season.
Under Paule the Bluejays are 4-3-0 in season openers, including 4-0-0 in contests at home to start a season and 5-2-0 in home openers.
Freshmen Hailey Rothwell and Maddie Radke Deliver in Closing Moments
The game-winning goal came with just 46 seconds remaining in the match as freshman Maddie Radke lifted a ball to the back post for fellow freshman Hailey Rothwell to make a run. Rothwell headed a looping shot into the back of the net in her first match as a Bluejay to give Creighton the victory.
Series History: Creighton leads Drake, 10-7-1
Creighton and Drake renew a rivalry that began as Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) foes. Just three hours apart, the Bluejays hold a 10-7-1 edge on the Bulldogs. Creighton has a 6-3-0 edge over Drake in Omaha, but the Bulldogs claimed the last meeting in Omaha, 1-0 on Sept. 12, 2017.

Scouting Drake (0-0-1)
Despite being out shot 19-3 in the season-opening match at Kansas, Drake earned a result against the Jayhawks with a 0-0 (2ot) draw. Undoubtedly the Bulldog defense carried their squad, but fifth-year goalkeeper Kelsie Stone was the star. Stone delivered 10 saves to preserve the draw, facing 10 shots in the second half alone.
The Drake offense managed its first shot of the match in the 85th minute, but forced a pair of shots that required saves in the opening overtime.

After posting a 2-4-2 mark in 2020, this group returns eight starters from last season. Drake added two transfers and seven first-year student-athletes to its roster. The Bulldog leader is Stone, who tied the school record for most saves in a game with 14 against Valparaiso on March 19, 2021. She also led the MVC with most in a game with 37 saves. Â
Scouting Creighton (0-0-0)
After reaching its first BIG EAST Tournament in 2020, Creighton returns 10 of 11 starters from last season. The heavy dose of experience helped the Bluejays earn a fifth-place prediction in the preseason BIG EAST Coaches Poll.
Leading the way for Creighton is the back line of sophomore goalkeeper Keelan Terrell as well as defenders Jordy Rothwell, Gabby Grimaldi and Peighton Steffen. On the offensive end it will be junior Ansley Atkinson and sophomore Aida Kardovic.
Kardovic led the Bluejays with nine points (four goals and one assist) in eight matches during 2020, earning All-BIG EAST First Team. Atkinson, meanwhile, delivered seven points (three goals and one assist) to earn All-BIG EAST Second Team. Both Atkinson and Kardovic collected more hardware as they were selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
The season opening win over Montana put Creighton's youth on display as freshman Abigail Santana and Hailey Rothwell punched in the goals. A quartet of assists came from freshman Greta Betz and Atkinson (Santana's) goal, while freshman Maddie Radke and Kardovic earned a helper on Rothwell's.

Freshman Hailey Rothwell's game-winner in the 110th minute against Montana on August 19 marked the first time in program history that the Bluejays posted an overtime win or overtime goal in a season opening game.
Creighton has played four overtime contests in season openers. A pair of 0-0 draws in 2009 (Iowa State) and 2010 (South Dakota State) as well as a 1-0 loss to Iowa State in 2012.
