Vontz is Runner-Up As Men's Golf Takes Seventh at Ram Masters Invitational

Nate Vontz finishes in top-11 for seventh straight tournament
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Nate Vontz tied for second-place to lead the Creighton men's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., on Tuesday.
Vontz shot rounds of 77 and 71 on Monday in extreme wind before a 2-over 72 on Tuesday in calmer conditions to finish as a runner-up, four shots behind Northern Colorado's Jack Castiglia. The senior from Lincoln has now finished in the top-11 in each of his last seven tournaments dating to last spring.
One week after finishing in second-place at the season-opening Wildcat Invitational, sophomore Charlie Zielinski tied for 22nd place. He followed consecutive 79s with a final-round 73 for a 231 total, extending his career-opening streak to 24 straight rounds of 79 or better.
Junior Cade McCallum tied for 42nd place with a 238 total. The Grand Island product opened with circuits of 82 and 81 before a 75 to close the event.
Jackson Thompson made huge strides after an opening round 89, compiling loops of 79 and 77 to tie for 73rd with a 245 total.
Freshman Jake Boor made his collegiate debut in 81st place after carding an 80, 88 and 81.
Competing as an individual and not factoring into the Bluejay team score was sophomore Jack Olson, who tied for 57th after scores of 87, 81 and 73. His 73 was the best round of his CU career by two shots.
Colorado State surged from fifth place to first place after a final-round 275 and a 901 team score overall, defeating Pacific by eight shots. Northern Colorado, which led after 18 and 36 holes, plummeted to ninth place after a 305 total on Tuesday.
The tournament featured 16 teams and 88 overall entrants on the par 70 Fort Collins Country Club Course that measured 7,234 yards.
Creighton returns to the course on Oct. 4-5 for the Stampede at the Creek, which will be held at The Club at Indian Creek in Elkhorn, Neb.
