Bluejays improve to 10-2 in BIG EAST play
Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's basketball team scored early and often in a 95-71 win over Providence on Friday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena. The start time was moved up to 4 p.m. local time to allow for the Friars to return home prior to an impending blizzard set to hit the Northeast.
Creighton (15-5, 10-2 BIG EAST) improved to 6-0 in BIG EAST home games ahead of Wednesday's showdown with league-leading Connecticut (12-4, 7-0 BIG EAST). Providence fell below the .500 mark and is 9-10 overall and 4-6 in league play.
The host Bluejays missed their first four shots before making 10 of its next 12 to close the first quarter with a 24-12 lead. CU assisted on nine of those baskets while committing just one turnover. Lauren Jensen paced CU with eight points in the first quarter, including a pair of triples, in the wire-to-wire win.
CU continued its torrid shooting in the second quarter, connecting on 11-of-15 attempts, which included 5-of-8 three-point tries. A four-point play by Morgan Maly with 3.9 seconds left gave the Jays a 54-34 lead at intermission in its most prolific first half since Feb. 2, 2013 when it scored 56 points at Drake.
Jensen led CU with 13 points before the break and all 11 Bluejays to see at least a minute of action scored at least one basket. CU shot 65.6 percent in the half and dished 18 helpers on 21 baskets.
Providence shot the ball better to start the third quarter and closed within 15 points (63-48) before a 15-point avalanche by the Bluejays had PC in too deep. Five different women scored during the flurry, including three-pointers from Maly and Jayme Horan. Creighton's lead stretched to 79-51 after three quarters with Jensen's 20 points leading the way.
The Bluejays would stretch their lead to as large as 31 (86-55) before the Friars answered with a 9-0 run, but it was too little too late. Horan stopped the PC surge with CU's season-high 15th three-pointer of the game. The Bluejays ended the day 16-of-34 from deep and improved to 15-0 al-time against Providence when scoring more than 63 points.
Creighton's 95 points tied a season-high, and its 47.1 percent marksmanship from downtown was its best mark this winter.Â
Jensen led all players with 20 points despite not playing in the fourth quarter and was joined in double-figures by Maly (17), Horan (a career-high 13 points) and Emma Ronsiek (11). Tatum Rembao had eight assists without a turnover to spearhead a Bluejay offense that finished with 29 assists on 34 baskets and just 11 turnovers overall. Creighton's bench contributed 44 points and Mallory Brake had five assists after entering the contest with three in her first 35 career games.
