Shaun Campbell tops the field after rounds of 66 and 72 on Monday
ELKHORN, Neb. -- A red-hot start for Shaun Campbell was enough to carry the Creighton junior to the 36-hole lead at the Big O Classic on Monday at The Club at Indian Creek. Campbell was 5-under through seven holes during his opening round, surging to the top of the leaderboard following rounds of 66 and 72 on Monday.
Campbell eagled his second hole of the day, Gray Hawk No. 2, and subsequently birdied No. 3, 5 and 7 to move to five under par. His birdie-free opening round of 66 also featured a birdie on Black Bird No. 2 en route to his best round as a Bluejay, and tied for the fourth-best loop in program history. Campbell's up-and-down second round 72 included five birdies and five bogeys, but his 138 total was still enough for him to enter Tuesday's final round with a one-stroke lead over St. Thomas' Matthew Armstrong.
Sophomore Cole Davis was also brilliant on Monday after back-to-back rounds of 70 for a 140 total to sit just two shots behind Campbell. The Indian Hills CC transfer started his day with seven consecutive pars, then birdied four of the next 11 holes in his opening round. His second round started with a double-bogey but he made up for it as he had an eagle on Gray Hawk No. 2 to finish his day.
Individuals Owen Mackin (T-21st; 72-74=146), Jackson Thompson (T34th; 72-76=148) and Cade McCallum (T63rd; 78-74=152) were next up for CU along with Nebraska transfer Tristan Nelko (T63rd; 75-77=152). Mackin birdied his first four holes of the day, Thompson owned five birdies overall and McCallum had six. Nelko birdied Gray Hawk No. 2 to open each of his first two rounds as a Bluejay.
Omaha native Kolby Brown made his collegiate debut with loops of 73 and 80 and is tied for 69th while competing as an individual. He birdied his first hole of the day, Black Bird No. 9.
Rounding out CU's lineup on Monday were Grant Feldman (T72nd; 75-79=154), Jake Boor (T77th; 77-78=155) and Charlie Zielinski (T77th; 78-77=155). Feldman eagled Gray Hawk No. 2 to open his afternoon round.
St. Thomas (290-284) and SIU Edwardsville (293-281) share the 36-hole lead after matching 574's on Monday, but all 14 teams in the field are within 24 shots. Creighton led after 18 holes but enters the final round in sixth place after scores of 286 and 296 to stand just eight shots outside the lead.
Ninety-three competitors are in the field for the Big O Classic, which is being played at The Club at Indian Creek on a par 72 layout measuring a whopping 7,498 yards.
Tuesday's final round starts at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start, with Campbell opening his round on Black Bird No. 3.
