Bluejay Women's Hoops Delivers Top-25 Road Win, 78-69 at #23 South Dakota State

Brookings, S.D. -- Behind a career-high 30 points from junior Lauren Jensen (Lakeville, Minn.), the 21st ranked Creighton women's basketball team delivered an impressive 78-69 road win at No. 23 South Dakota State on Monday, November 7.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 1-0 on the season, while South Dakota State dropped to 0-1.
Early in the contest the two teams felt each other out as the Bluejays led 6-5 midway through the opening frame. A 7-0 run for the Jackrabbits gave South Dakota State a 12-6 edge with 3:30 remaining. Creighton answered with a triple from junior Jayme Horan (Omaha, Neb.) and a driving layup from senior Rachael Saunders (Iowa City, Iowa) to make it 12-11 (2:40).
The Jackrabbits, however, closed the first quarter with five straight points and extended their edge to 25-16 (8:18) early in the second. Creighton countered once more with an 8-0 run, ignited by a traditional three-point play from junior Morgan Maly (Crete, Neb.),
With just under two minutes left in the opening half, the Bluejays surged ahead 33-32 on a pair of free throws from Saunders. South Dakota State grabbed the final four points of the half to take a 36-33 edge into the locker room.
After the Jackrabbits delivered the first bucket of the second half, the Bluejays seized control with a 10-0 run to grab a 43-38 advantage with 7:06 remaining. Creighton's big three delivered all ten points, getting from from Maly and junior Emma Ronsiek (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and two from Jensen.
Following a timeout South Dakota State rallied to knot the score at 43-43, but Creighton refused to give up the lead. Tied twice more in the frame, Horan delivered another huge trey to start a 9-1 surge. Jensen followed with a three-pointer of her own, then junior Molly Mogensen (Farmington, Minn.) capped the run with a traditional three-point play to give the Bluejays a 56-48 lead (2:06).
Jensen began to sizzle in the fourth quarter, delivering 16 of her game-high 30 points in the final frame. Despite Jensen's efforts the Jackrabbits delivered one final push to pull even at 64-64 (6:09). The Jackrabbits had three chances to take the lead, but Creighton's defense rose to the challenge. With 4:01 left in the contest, Ronsiek started a 9-0 Bluejay run with a driving layup. Jensen did the rest with 11 of Creighton's final 12 points as the Bluejays put the game away with a 9-0 run to build a 73-64 advantage with 1:11 remaining.
Jensen's 30-point performance led all scorers, while Maly finished with 13 points. South Dakota State got a team-high 22 points from Myah Selland and 10 each from Haleigh Timmer as well as Ellie Colbeck.
Creighton returns to the court on Thursday, November 10 when the Bluejays make a return trip to South Dakota, In a battle with another bracket buster from last season, Creighton faces South Dakota at 7:00 p.m. Last season the Coyotes reached the Sweet 16, before falling to Michigan.
