Scouting the Bluejays (2022: 0-4, 0-0 BIG EAST)
The opening weekend in Portland was unusual for the Bluejays, specifically under Servais.
It is a fair assessment that the Bluejays did not reach their team expectations in any phase of the game. Creighton surrendered 34 runs, made six errors and hit just .222 as a team.
The Bluejays are led by the 2022 Preseason BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year (Dylan Tebrake) as well the 2022 Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, Alan Roden.
Preseason expectations are one thing, but Roden was the 2021 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and Tebrake was the 2021 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year.
At Portland, Roden was one of two Bluejays to perform well at the dish (.462). Junior Jared Wegner also had a strong weekend in the Pacific Northwest (.357).
Tebrake and BIG EAST Second Team selections Andrew Meggs and Paul Bergstrom were each a bit off in Portland. It is fair to expect all three to perform better against the Lions.
Scouting the Lions (2022: 0-3-1, 0-0 WCC)
Similar to the Bluejays, Loyola Marymount stumbled out of the gate this season.
The Lions went 0-2-1 in a home opening series, then fell to #20 UC Santa Barbara 18-7 on Tuesday.
The Lions were picked to finish seventh in the WCC Preseason Poll, just below Portland.
In four games, Loyola Marymount hit .232 as a team. The Lions most productive bats were Sam Biller (.357), Decan Ornelas (.308) and Dylan Dennis (.300).
On the mound the Lions allowed 45 runs on 54 hits and 31 walks (8.03 ERA).
