Extra Innings Rally Lifts Bluejays To 4-2 Win Over Seton Hall

Kailey Wilson hits game-tying home run in the seventh and Bluejays score two in the ninth.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Creighton softball team used a seventh inning home run and a two run ninth to upend Seton Hall, 4-2, for their first BIG EAST victory on Sunday morning.
The win snaps the Bluejays four-game losing skid and moves the Jays to 11-10 on the year and 1-3 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall falls to 10-10 overall and 3-3 during BIG EAST action.
Creighton struck first in the top of the first inning as Madeline Vejvoda and Cayla Nielsen led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Vejvoda advanced to third on Nielsen's single while Nielsen stole second. Following a Seton Hall strikeout, Vejvoda took advantage of a passed ball to score the Bluejays first run of the game.
The Bluejays would threaten to score again with a runner on third in the top of the third inning but Seton Hall starting pitcher Shelby Smith closed the door with a strikeout to end the frame.
In the bottom half of the inning, Smith would come up big for the Pirates. Janea Barracato led off the inning with a single but advanced to second on an error before taking third on a fly ball. Smith then step to the plate with two out and delivered an RBI single to left center to knot things up at 1-1.
The Pirates tacked on an addition run in the fourth as Baylee Allender and Hannah Alexander worked back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. The two then advanced to second and third before Barracato beat out and single deep into the hole to push Allender across the plate and give Seton Hall a 2-1 lead.
Both teams would go scoreless until Kailey Wilson lined a solo home run over the right centerfield fence in the top of the seventh tie things up at 2-2.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Bluejays would plate two in the top of the nine to secure the 4-2 win and their first BIG EAST win of the season. Junior Kiara Mills was hit by a pitch and stole second to lead off the inning before advancing on a groundball by Wilson. Following a strikeout, sophomore Saren Croker pinch hit for Brittney Manthie and delivered a RBi double into the left centerfield gap to give Creighton a 3-2 lead. The Bluejays tacked on an additional run as Vejvoda scored Manthie, who re-entered for Croker, on a RBI single for a 4-2 advantage.
Junior Kate Mullally retired the Pirates in order in the bottom half of the inning to earn her first win of the season. Mullally tossed all nine innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. She also struck out a career-high six batters in the win. Vejvoda and Nielsen each collected two hits to lead the Bluejays offense, while six others collected a hit.
The Bluejays return to action on Tuesday when they host South Dakota at 4 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.
