Bluejays host five straight games next week, starting Tuesday vs. Nebraska.
Wichita, Kan. -- Creighton Baseball saw its seven-game win streak snapped with a 6-3 loss at Wichita State on Sunday, March 27.
The Shockers scored in three of the first four innings to take a 6-0 lead against Bluejay hurlers Cade Lommel, Griffin Holderfield and Marc Lidd. Down 3-0, CU squandered a promising opportunity when it had its first two men reach before Shocker starter Cameron Bye wiggled out of trouble with a sac bunt, a strikeout and a ground out. The bottom half of the inning added to Creighton's frustration as Lommel retired the first two hitters before six consecutive runners reached to push Wichita State's lead to 6-0.
Creighton (11-7) avoided its first shutout of 2022 with a tally in the seventh inning. Nolan Sailors reached on a wild pitch and advanced to third base on a single from pinch hitter Hogan Helligso. Sailors then beat a throw home on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Hess.
The Bluejays put a scare into the Shockers in the ninth inning on a two-run, two-out single by Andrew Meggs, before Shocker closer Connor Holden retired sophomore Alan Roden on a grounder for the final out.
Lommel fell to 0-3 on the season, allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings of work. He was one of six Bluejays to make an appearance on the bump on Sunday. Alan Roden accounted for two of CU's six hits, including a double.
Shocker starter Cameron Bye (2-0) allowed just a lone unearned run in a season-long six innings of work, also picking up six strikeouts. His ERA through 21.2 innings remains a perfect 0.00. Centerfielder Chuck Ingram paced the WSU attack with three hits and also had one of five stolen bases for the hosts.
Creighton opens a five-game homestand on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts in-state rival Nebraska (9-13) at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. The game will be televised by Nebraska Public Media.
