OMAHA, Neb. -- Ed Servais earned his 600th win at Creighton on Friday night as the Bluejay baseball team scored 11 times in its final two at bats to post an 11-2 win over The Citadel on a rainy night at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Trailing 2-0 at the seventh inning stretch, Creighton (13-7) sent 14 men to the plate to pull away from The Citadel (17-8). Jack Grace was called on to pinch hit and started the rally with a double down the third base line and scored CU's first run one out later on Nolan Clifford's single and a throwing error on right fielder Ryan McCarthy. Sterling Hayes followed with a double to the wall in left center to tie the score, then plated the go-ahead run on Ben North's first career hit and RBI to make it 3-2. Andrew Meggs extended the rally with a single to center, ending the day of Citadel starter Cameron Reeves (2-2).
Reliever Simon Graf was called on to halt the rally but freshman Nolan Sailors reached on an error by first baseman Crosby Jones, which loaded the bases. After a fielder's choice erased North at home, Jared Wegner earned a five-pitch walk to score Meggs. Grace then continued his big inning with a two-run single through the right side, pushing the Bluejay advantage to 6-2.
Jordan Beatson came out of the bullpen and gave up a double-steal, then uncorked a wild pitch that scored Wegner. Following two more walks, Beatson was replaced by Will Bastian. Bastian walked Hayes, which plated Grace, before The Citadel finally gathered the third out. All told, the Bluejays had eight runs on six hits, taking advantage of four walks and a pair of errors from The Citadel.
CU tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth inning against reliever Matthew Polk. Meggs tripled and scored on a grounder hit by Sailors that would be thrown away by Bulldog shortstop Tilo Skole. Alan Roden was then hit by a 2-1 offering before he and Sailors scored when Wegner tripled to left-center to make it 11-2.
The Citadel had scored first with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. Dominick Poole raced to third on a three-base throwing error and scored the game's initial run on a sacrifice fly by Crosby Jones. The Citadel's second tally came when Dylan Costa and Tilo Skole laced consecutive singles and Costa came around to score on a Cole Simpson single. Both runs came off Bluejay ace Dylan Tebrake, who threw six innings and lowered his ERA 2.54 in the process, but did into factor into a decision.
Meggs went 3-for-5 to lead an offensive attack that featured four players owning multiple hits. Grace went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI despite entering the game in the seventh inning, while Clifford and Hayes each had a pair of hits as well. Tommy Lamb threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Reeves was sensational through six innings, but surrendered five runs (three earned) in the seventh inning. The senior struck out nine Bluejays without issuing a walk in 111 pitches of work. Costa went 3-fo-4 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs, who were playing outside of Charleston (S.C.) County for the first time this season.
The Bluejays and Bulldogs will meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. The game will be televised statewide by Nebraska Public Media.
