4/1/2022 8:28:00 PM | Women's Tennis
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Creighton women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Marquette on Friday night at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 9-5 on the year, while the Golden Eagles improved to 9-7 overall.
Marquette won 6-3 and 6-2 at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots during doubles action and earned three straight-sets victories and one three-set victories to claim the 5-2 win.
Creighton's Valerie Negin and Sarah Wilcox captured the Bluejays lone wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 single positions. Negin claimed a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 slot for the Bluejays first point of the match. Wilcox battled to a three-set triumph at the No. 3 singles position for the Bluejays. The senior dropped the first set 7-6 but responded with a 7-5 win in the second set before claiming a 1-0 win in set three.
"It was a tough loss for the women today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We just let a few chances get away in doubles and singles and that was the difference in those matches. Solid wins by Valerie and Sarah but we just didn't have enough against a strong Marquette team today."
The Bluejays are back in action against DePaul tomorrow at 4:15 in Chicago.
