Creighton hits three home runs in Sunday's victory
Hess, who entered the day with six RBI in his first 23 games as a Bluejay, matched that total as part of a big day that also included a two-run double in the fourth inning.
Creighton (18-8, 3-0 BIG EAST) won for the 18th time in its last 22 games and dropped Georgetown to 19-13 overall (2-4 BIG EAST). Creighton improved to 12-0 this season at home, and its 14 game home win streak dating to last year is the program's longest home win streak since 2005.
The Bluejays never trailed in Sunday's victory, scoring three times in the fourth inning against Georgetown starter Matthew Sapienza (1-2). Freshman Nolan Sailors doubled to the warning track in left-center to score junior Jared Wegner. Sailors and junior Jack Grace then motored home when Hess slammed a double to right-center.
Creighton's lead remained 3-0 as Cade Lommel was able to pitch out of trouble through four scoreless frames. The sophomore southpaw wasn't as fortunate in the fifth inning, as Georgetown loaded the bases with nobody out before Lommel gave way to junior Marc Lidd on the mound. Lidd allowed consecutive sacrifice flies as the Hoyas closed within one before inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Sailors added an insurance run with a homer to right in the sixth inning, pushing the Bluejay margin to 4-2, before CU broke the game wide open as 11 straight men reached with two outs in the seventh inning. Sophomore Alan Roden started the seventh inning rally with an two-out RBI single to right, driving home sophomore Nolan Clifford to make it 5-2. Wegner followed with his team-leading eighth homer of the season, brining in Roden to push the game to 7-2. Four batters later, Hess blasted a grand slam for his first collegiate home run, giving the Bluejays an 11-2 edge. Before the inning came to a close junior Andrew Meggs singled to make it 12-2 and Wegner uncorked a two-run single as the lead ballooned to 14-2.
Hess and Wegner guided Creighton's offense with a combined five hits and 10 RBI. Hess went 2-for-4 with six RBI, while Wegner went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Six Bluejay pitchers worked on Sunday with Tommy Steier improving to 3-0 on the season after earning four outs in the sixth and seventh inning.
Georgetown had six hits on the afternoon, led by a pair from catcher Tony Barreca.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. when it visits Nebraska. That game will be broadcast on BTN+.
