Softball Drops Series Finale To UConn, 13-5

Bluejays committed six errors against UConn, their most in a game since May 4, 2019, against Seton Hall.
STORRS, Conn. – Six defensive miscues dropped the Creighton softball team in the series finale to UConn, 13-5, in five innings on Sunday morning at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn. Creighton's six errors today were the most errors the Bluejay have had in a contest since also committing six errors against Seton Hall on May 4, 2019.
The Bluejays moved to 14-17 on the year and 4-9 in BIG EAST play with the setback, while UConn improved to 24-13 overall and 13-2 in conference action.
UConn opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first inning with a single unearned run. Lexi Hastings got the Huskies started with an infield single, before Jana Sanden and Rosie Garcia reached base on back-to-back fielding errors on the Bluejays which allowed Hastings to come around to score.
The Huskies tacked on another run in the second inning as Erika Coreth and Aziah James drew walks and Briana Marcelino reached on an error before Guevarra ripped an RBI single to shortstop to make the score 2-0.
Creighton responded with four runs on two hits, two walks and a UConn error in the top of the third inning to take lead. Sophomore Emma Rosonke drew a walk to open the inning and was moved to third on a double by sophomore Alyssa Gappa. Two outs later, sophomore Cayla Nielsen drove in the Bluejays first run of the game by beating out an infield single to third base. Junior Kailey Wilson loaded the bases as she was hit by a pitch before junior Kiara Mills drew an RBI walk to knot things up at 2-2. Nielsen and Megan Miklesh would come around to score as junior Sam Alm reached safely on an error by the Huskies second baseman to give the Bluejays a 4-2 lead.
UConn would capitalize on a pair of Creighton errors in the bottom of the third inning to even the game up at 4-4. The Huskies Giuliana Abruscato scored on a sac fly from Coreth, before Sami Barnett scored on an error to tie the game up at 4-4.
The Huskies used four hits, a walk and an error in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take command of the ball game.
Creighton showed no signs of quit as the Bluejays plated one run in the top of the fifth inning. Wilson opened the inning with a ground-rule double and moved to third on a flyout by Mills. Wilson came into score as Alm delivered her team-lead fourth sacrifice fly of the season to cut the deficit to 9-5.
The Huskies, however, would end the game early with four more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Hastings doubled double the left field line and scored moments later as Sanden singled up the middle. Back-to-back singles by Olivia Sappington and Barrett allowed Coreth to plate the another run with an RBI walk, before Lauren Benson drove in a run with a hit by a pitch. Guevarra finished the game with an RBI single down the left field line to give the Huskies a 13-5 lead.
Gappa led Creighton's offense with two hits, while Vejvoda, Nielsen and Wilson each collected a hit for the Bluejays. Wilson extended her on-base streak to 19 straight games while collecting her team-leading ninth double of the year.
Bluejay sophomore Jena Lawrence (2-3) suffered the loss for Creighton after allowing five runs, three hits and one walk in the fourth inning. Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz allowed just one earned run in 3.1 innings of work while Kate Mullally also tossed 1.1 innings out of thee Bluejays bullpen today.
Five different Huskies collected multiple hits in the contest led by Barnnett's three hit performance. Meghan O'Neil earned the win in the circle for UConn.
The Bluejays host Villanova in a three-gamer series set to begin on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.
