For second straight season, Vontz named to first team; Zielinski a second team choice
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – For the second straight season, Creighton had a pair of golfers named to the All-Conference Team as senior Nate Vontz was selected as a First Team pick, while sophomore Charlie Zielinski was chosen to the Second Team.
This is the second straight season that Vontz has been elected to the First Team and Zielinski picked to the Second Team.
The BIG EAST Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year will be named after the Championship. The all-conference teams are chosen by the league's head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players.
Vontz earns First Team honors after leading Creighton with a 71.63 scoring average and five top-10 finishes. The Lincoln, Neb., product has shot par or better in 11-of-24 rounds, including back-to-back rounds of 63 and 65 on October 4th at the Stampede at the Creek. His 71.63 scoring average puts him on pace to be CU's best single-season mark in at least 19 seasons. Vontz's 115 career rounds as a Bluejay are a program record, and he has shot a 78 or better in all 42 of his rounds since the start of the 2020-21 campaign. Vontz becomes Creighton's first two-time First Team All-Conference golfer in program history and is one of two repeat members on the First Team, joining Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn.
Zielinski earns Second Team All-BIG EAST accolades for the second straight season after ranking third on the CU team with a 72.85 scoring average. The Omaha native has shot par or better in 10-of-27 rounds this season, including a low round of 67. Zielinski has shot 79 or better in all 45 rounds as a Bluejay, and his 73.13 career scoring average is the best of any Bluejay to have played in at least 30 rounds since 2003. Zielinski owns three top-5 finishes this season.
In addition to Vontz and Eichhorn, the All-BIG EAST First Team included Tyler Leach of Marquette and Seton Hall's Andres Acevedo and Gregor Tait. The second team includes golfers from six schools. A tie in the voting created an extra position.
