Kailey Wilson Records Three Hits As Softball Falls to UConn, 7-3

STORRS, Conn. – Junior Kailey Wilson finished the day 3-for-3 but the Creighton softball team was unable to overcome an early deficit as the Bluejays fell 7-3 to UConn on Saturday night at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
The Bluejays fall to 14-16 on the year and 4-8 in BIG EAST play, while UConn improved to 23-13 overall and 12-2 in conference action.
UConn struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Briana Marcelino reached on a single and stole second before Reese Guevarra drew a walk. Jana Sanden then drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single to right field, while Guevarra came around to score on a groundout to give UConn the early 2-0 lead.
The Huskies added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Barnett led off the inning with a single to left. She would come around to score on a double by Marcelino before Marcelino scored on a single by Guevarra to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Bluejays would regroup and responded in a big way with three runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen got things started with a double into the right centerfield gap before scoring on an RBI double by Kailey Wilson. Junior Kiara Mills worked a walk while junior Sam Alm lined an RBI single through the left side of the infield to cut the deficit down to 4-2. Senior Shayna Dahlen then delivered a sacrifice fly deep into the right centerfield gap to score Mills from third and make the score 4-3.
UConn tacked on an additional run in the bottom half of third inning as Lexi Hastings beat out an infield single and stole second and third before scoring on a groundout by Rosie Garcia.
The Huskies extended their lead back out to four with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Barnett singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a single by Marcelino while Hastings drove in a run on an infield single to give the Huskies a 7-3 lead.
Wilson extended her on-base streak to 18 straight games with a of hits, including a double to lead the Bluejays offense. Junior Kate Mullally took the loss (4-5) after surrendering four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Elise Sokolsky picked up the win, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and striking out five batters.
Creighton wraps up their three-game series with the Huskies on Sunday morning with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. CT at the Burrill Family Field.
