Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton ace Dylan Tebrake delivered a program record 15 strikeouts in his second consecutive complete game, powering the Bluejay Baseball team to a 3-1 win over Butler on Friday, May 13.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 26-16 on the season and 11-5 in BIG EAST action, while Butler fell to 18-31-1 overall and 2-13-1 in conference play.
Both teams scratched the scoreboard early as Creighton claimed a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and Butler pulled even with a tally in the top of the second.
The Bluejays seized the lead on back-to-back extra-base hits in the opening inning as sophomore Kyle Hess laced a one-out triple to right-center, then sophomore Alan Roden lined an RBI double to left-center.
Butler pulled even with a leadoff double in the second by Scott Jones. The Bulldog right fielder took third on a wild pitch and scored one out later via a sacrifice fly to center from catcher Kollyn All.
The game remained knotted 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Creighton got a critical two-run double from junior Jared Wegner.
Creighton's sixth inning began with a leadoff double from freshman catcher Hogan Helligso. Junior Andrew Meggs moved Helligso to third with a sacrifice bunt with one down. After a strikeout, the Bulldogs intentionally walked Roden. A ball in the dirt moved Roden to second, allowing Wegner to make Butler pay by pulling a two-run double just inside the left-field line.
That was more than enough offense for Tebrake as the Minnesota native was masterful as he moved to 7-2 on the season. Tebrake closed the contest with a Creighton single-game record 15 strikeouts, besting the mark of 14 set by Peyton Lewis in 1999 against Missouri State. Tebrake allowed just three hits in a complete-game win. The right-hander needed 117 pitches to claim the game. Tebrake retired 21 of the final 23 batters he faced, allowing a walk in the fifth and a single in the eighth.
Butler's Adrian Vega took the loss (0-1), allowing three runs on five hits in six innings of work.
Creighton's five hits came from five different hitters, yet Wegner's knock in the sixth was the biggest.
Creighton and Butler continue their three-game series on Saturday, May 14 in a 6:30 p.m. contest as Creighton Baseball celebrates Military and First Responders during the event.
