Storrs, Conn. -- Despite early offense and a late blast, the Creighton Baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision at #15 Connecticut on Saturday, May 7.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 25-14 on the season and 10-4 in BIG EAST action, while the Huskies climbed to 39-8 overall and 13-1 in conference play.
Creighton got things going early as sophomore Kyle Hess laced a one-out single up the middle. Sophomore Alan Roden followed with a walk and junior Jared Wegner blasted a two-run double to right-center. Wegner, however, was cut down trying to take third. Creighton proceeded to load the bases on singles from junior Jack Grace, freshman Nolan Sailors and a walk to senior Chris Esposito. Sophomore Nolan Clifford, however, went down on strikes to leave the bags full.
Connecticut countered with a pair of runs in its half of the opening frame on three walks and two singles, yet the Huskies also left the bags juiced in the opening inning.
The Huskies seized a 3-2 lead in the second courtesy of a solo home run from Erik Stock, then pushed their edge to 4-2 on a sac fly by Stock in the fourth.
The game moved into the seventh still with Connecticut holding the 4-2 edge. With one down for the Bluejays in the seventh, junior Andrew Meggs singled to center and Hess doubled to right to put the tying runners in scoring position. Roden lifted a sac fly to right-center, but that is all the Bluejays could push across.
The bottom of the seventh saw the Huskies respond with two runs on four singles and a wild pitch. Connecticut got a leadoff single from Casey Dana, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Ben Huber to make it 5-3. With runners at second and third, Creighton reliever Tommy Steier uncorked a wild pitch to push the score to 6-3.
Down to their final out in the ninth inning, Hess delivered his fourth hit of the day for the Bluejays. Roden followed by crushing a fastball over the right field wall, his fourth home run of the season to draw the Bluejays within a run at 6-5. Connecticut brought closer Justin Willis to face Creighton's Wegner, but the Husky right-hander won the battle to secure the series for Connecticut.
UConn reliever Garrett Coe earned the win (1-0) with three innings of one-run ball. Creighton starter Dominic Cancellier suffered the loss (5-2), allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks in 3.2 innings. Willis earned his 13th save of the season, getting the final out of the contest.
Hess, Roden and Wegner, the Bluejays' 2-3-4 hitters, led the offense going a combined 6-for-12 with four RBI and four runs scored.
