Baseball Comes Up Short Against UNLV, 10-7

Omaha, Neb. -- Down 8-0 in the third inning, Creighton Baseball made a valiant effort to revive its comeback prowess from the weekend. The Bluejays, however, fell to UNLV 10-7 on Tuesday, April 25.
The loss moved Creighton to 18-15 on the season, while the Rebels climbed to 16-22.
The Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on singles from Alex Pimentel and Rylan Charles to open the game, followed by a productive out and a two-run single from Austin Kryszczuk.
The Rebels extended their lead to 8-0 in the third by loading the bases on a hit batter and two walks, then getting a sacrifice fly from Kryszczuk. Down 4-0 after two additional walks, the big blast of the game came from Jason Sharman as he connected on a grand slam off Bluejay reliever Malakai Vetock.
Creighton got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The first Bluejay runs took advantage of a leadoff error, a single by junior Nolan Clifford and a wild pitch to make it 8-1. Senior Sterling Hayes followed with an RBI single to make it 8-2.
Freshman Ben North delivered an RBI double in the fifth and scored on a double play ball later in the frame.
Trailing 10-4 entering the ninth, Creighton pushed across three runs on a leadoff single from sophomore Hogan Helligso, two hit batters, an run scoring wild pitch and a two-run double from grad transfer Tyler Lozano. Before the game concluded the Bluejays loaded the bases for senior Jack Grace, however his hard ground ball up the middle was gloved by second baseman Gianni Horvat. The Rebel forced Hayes at second for the final out.
UNLV starter Josh Sharman allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings to collect the win (5-1), while Creighton starter Cade Lommel took the loss (0-7). Lommel surrendered six runs over 2.2 frames on three hits, three walks and a hit batter.
The Bluejays and Rebels conclude their two-game midweek set on Wednesday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m.
