Lawrence and Rosonke Lead Bluejay Softball To Doubleheader Sweep of South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. –The Creighton softball team wrapped up non-conference play with a midweek doubleheader sweep of South Dakota on Tuesday afternoon at Nygaard Field in Vermillion, S.D. The Bluejays cruised to a 7-1 win in game one and hung on to win game two 9-7.
With the pair of wins, Creighton improves to 20-27 on the year, while South Dakota falls to 19-23 overall.
Junior Jena Lawrence struck out a career-high eight batters, while earning her first win of the season with a complete-game performance in game one. Emma Rosonke, Cayla Nielsen and Lily West each finished with three hits, while Rosonke led the way with two RBI on a two-run home run in the first game of the day.
Senior Kailey Wilson then led three Bluejays with two hits, while Freshman Ella Dalton drove in a game-high three runs in game two. Freshman Natalia Puchino(12-13) secured the win, while Lawrence recorded her first save of the season in the second game.

GAME 1
Creighton scored early and often in game one with three runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fifth and one more in the seventh to secure a 7-1 win.
The Bluejays soared out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Nielsen opened the game with a leadoff double before scoring on an RBI single by Lily West. Following a pair of outs, Rosonke blasted a two-run shot to straight away center to give Creighton a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.
South Dakota answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Aleesia Sainz led off the frame with a double to left. Sainz was then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and come in to score on an RBI double by Courtney Wilson. That would be all the Coyotes would get as Lawrence kept South Dakota off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Creighton would add to its lead in the top of the third inning as Rosonke hit a single to center, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Dalton to give the Bluejays a 4-1 advantage.
The Bluejays lead grew to 6-1 in the top of the fifth inning as the Bluejays plated two runs on two hits and a fielder's choice. Madeline Vejvoda got things started with a single through the right side of the infield, before Dalton reached on a fielder's choice to place runners on first and second. Nielsen then drove in the Bluejays fifth run of the game on a single to center before Dalton stole home for the Bluejays sixth run of the game.
Creighton wrapped up the victory with an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Dalton once against stole home to secure the 7-1 win.
GAME 2
Similar to game one, Creighton jumped out to an early lead behind five runs in the top of the first inning. Nielsen reached on a leadoff walk, while Wilson placed runners on first and second after reaching on an error by the Coyotes right fielder. Rosonke then laced an RBI single back up the middle for the Bluejays first run of the game. The lead grew to 2-0 moments later as senior Saren Croker lined an RBI single into center. Vejvoda then reached on catcher's interference before Dalton slapped a bases clear double to left center to make the score 5-0.
The Coyotes answered with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead down to 5-3. An RBI double to center field by Gabby Moser plated the first run of the game for the Coyotes, before back-to-back RBI singles by Jaden Gaja and Wilson cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Bluejays responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning to regain a five-run advantage. Dalton and Frame earned back-to-back walks to open the frame before both came in to score on an RBI single from Nielsen. A fielding error on the play allowed Nielsen to advance to third, where she came across to score on an RBI single by West.
South Dakota answered once again with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the score, 8-5. Four singles, including back-to-back base knocks by Sainz and Delaney White cut into the Bluejays lead.
The Coyote continued to chip away at the Bluejays lead with a single run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-6. Three straight walks loaded the bases before an RBI single up the middle by Wilson plated the Coyotes sixth run of the game.
Creighton answered with a single run in the top of the sixth on a groundout by Kailey Wilson to give the Bluejays a 9-6 lead but the Coyotes plated one in the bottom half of the seventh inning as the Bluejays hung on for a 9-7 victory.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday as they hit the road for the final time this season, traveling to Providence for a pivotal three-game series.
