Bluejay Baseball Blow By Butler, 16-3

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Behind 14 runs in the first three innings, Creighton Baseball Beat Down Butler 16-3 on Friday, April 28.
The victory moved the Bluejays into a tie for first place in the BIG EAST Conference at 7-3 and also lifted Creighton to 20-15 on the season. Butler, meanwhile, fell to 9-32 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
With one out in the first inning the Bluejays jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with consecutive singles from senior Andrew Meggs, junior Noah Clifford and an RBI single through the left side. Lozano was cut down trying to take second, but Lozano stayed in a rundown long enough for Clifford to cross the plate.Â
The Bluejay bats went back to work in the second with six runs on four hits and an error. Grad transfer Ben Gbur drove in the first run of the second, while Clifford blasted a two-run single later in the frame. The big blow of the frame came from senior Jack Grace as he blasted his 10th home run of the season over the left-center field wall. Grace's blast plated three runs in the frame.
Butler answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, but Creighton responded with five runs on six hits and two errors. Creighton's third inning runs came on a two-run double from sophomore Nolan Sailors, an RBI single from Lozano and two more crossing the plate due to Butler miscues.
Grace and sophomore Hogan Helligso guided the Creighton offense with three hits, Grace finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Helligso was 3-for-5 with four runs scored. The Bluejays closed the game with 16 hits, including 14 singles.
Creighton starter Dominic Cancellieri picked up the win (2-1), allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings, while Butler starter Nick Miketinac suffered the loss (1-1). Miketinac gave up 14 runs (eight earned) on 15 hits in three innings.
Creighton and Butler continue their three-game set on Saturday, April 29 with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
