Creighton Baseball Extends BIG EAST Win Streak to Five Games

Bluejays Take Down Bulldgos, 5-3
Indianapolis, Ind. -- Creighton Baseball extended its BIG EAST win streak to five games as the Bluejays defeated Butler 5-3 on Saturday, April 29.
The win lifted Creighton to 21-15 on the season and 8-3 in conference action, while Butler dropped to 9-33 overall and 2-9 in BIG EAST play.
Bluejay starter Ryan Windham earned the win (5-1), holding the Bulldogs to two runs over seven innings. Creighton closer Tommy Steier picked up his five save of the year with two scoreless frames. Bulldog reliever Dawson Taylor took the loss (2-2), allowing three runs on five hits over 1.2 innings.
Sophomore Hogan Helligso picked up two of the Bluejays seven hits in the game, also scoring two runs.
Creighton struck first in the second as senior Sterling Hayes blasted his first home run of the season to right. Butler answered with a run in the on consecutive two-out hits, including an RBI double from Kollyn All.
Helligso and the Bluejays responded in the top of the fifth as the Bluejay catcher walks, went to second on a sacrifice, took third via an error and scored on a sac fly to left.
Once more Butler pulled even in the sixth, getting a solo home run from Xavier Carter.
The Bluejays took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, greeting Taylor with singles from Helligso, freshman Ben North, grad transfer Ben Gbur and senior Andrew Meggs. Helligso crossed the plate on an error, while Gbur delivered an RBI single up the middle. The final run of the frame came on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Nolan Sailors.
Creighton turned to the bullpen in the bottom of the eight but Steier worked out of a bases loaded jam with one out by getting a pop and a fly out. The Bulldogs went quietly in the ninth.
Creighton and Butler will conclude their three-game set on Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. first pitch.
