TULSA, Okla. – The Creighton men's tennis team overcame an early deficit to capture a 4-3 victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon at the Bernis Duke Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The Bluejays improved to 12-4 on the year with the win, while Oral Roberts fell to 6-16 overall with the loss.
The Golden Eagles soared out to an early lead with victories at the top two doubles positions to earn the first point of the match. Freshman Zachary Kuo and graduate Oscar Alvarez picked up a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot, while Oral Roberts claimed identical 6-4 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
In singles play, the Bluejays claimed wins at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions to secure the 4-3 win.
Sophomore Alejandro Gandini captured his 11th straight singles victory with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the No. 3 spot, while graduate Casey Ross claimed a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets victory at the No. 2 singles position to give Creighton its first lead of match.
Oral Roberts, however, answered with wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 singles positions to regain a 3-2 lead.
Freshman Kirtan Patel dropped his opening set to Ricardo Filho, 6-4, but responded with a 6-2 win in set two to force a deciding third set. In the decisive third frame, Patel battled to a 6-4 win to level the contest at 3-3.
The focus shifted quickly to the final match being played on the No. 5 singles court. Alvarez surged out to an early advantage with a 6-4 win in set one, before Oral Roberts' Kevin Leuenberger forced a winner-take-all third set with a 7-6 (7-4) win in set two. Alvarez regrouped after the second set loss and clinched the overall dual for the Bluejays with a 6-4 victory.
"We pulled a rabbit out of the hat today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We didn't play great and we weren't as focused as we needed to be in doubles, but credit to our guys for never giving up. We had to make a big comeback on Oscar's court to take this match. Oral Roberts is well coached and this match could have gone either way, we are just grateful to fell our way this afternoon."
Creighton will be back in action last tonight at 6 p.m. when they take on No. 59 ranked Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
