CHICAGO, Ill. – Despite recording 10 hits, the Creighton softball team dropped the series finale at DePaul, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium in Chicago, Illinois.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 16-22 on the year and 3-9 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul improved to 12-20 overall and 4-8 in league action.
DePaul opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the bottom of the first inning. Addison Talbot drew a four-pitch walk before Brooke Johnson hit a triple just out of the reach of the diving Emma Rosonke in right field to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead.
DePaul's early advantage didn't last long as junior Alyssa Gappa launched the first pitch she saw over the left center field wall for her team-leading ninth home run of the season to level the contest at 1-1.
After a scoreless third, Creighton capitalized on a trio of hits to take its first lead of the game. Madeline Vejvoda got things started with a bloop single to center before senior Saren Croker lined a double off the left field wall. Vejvoda looked to be thrown out at home trying to score on a fly out to left by Emma Rosonke, but a challenge by Creighton overturned the call giving Creighton a 2-1 lead. Freshman Ensley Frame then delivered an RBI single down the left field line to extend the Bluejays lead out to 3-1.
DePaul, however, answered with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to regain a 5-3 lead. A fielding error, a walk and an RBI single by Tori Meyer cut the Bluejays lead down to 3-2, before a two-run single by Riley Pool pushed the Blue Demons out in front 4-3. Following a pitching change, Anna Wohlers delivered an RBI groundout to first to extend the advantage out to 5-3.
Creighton responded with a single run in the top half of the fifth on a solo home run by junior Cayla Nielsen to cut the deficit in half to 5-4, but a solo home run by Meyer in the bottom of the sixth inning pushed the lead back out to two at 6-4.
The Bluejays tallied 10 hits in the game, led by Nielsen with two hits including a solo home run. Croker also contributed two hits, including a double. Freshman Natalia Puchino (9-10) suffered the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on just three hits and three walks in 3.1 innings of work.
The Bluejays will return to action on Tuesday for a midweek non-conference clash with crosstown rival Omaha. First pitch between the Bluejays and Mavericks is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.
