Creighton finishes 25-24 overall
Omaha, Neb. -- The 2023 Creighton Baseball season came to an end on Saturday as the Bluejays lost 10-0 to No. 9 Connecticut and Georgetown picked up a 6-5 win at Xavier. The combination of those two scores not only clinched a third straight BIG EAST regular-season title for the Huskies, but also helped the Hoyas secure the fourth and final spot in next week's BIG EAST Championships Presented by JEEP.
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the third inning against Bluejay starter Justin Kleinsorge, highlighted by Ben Huber's 14th homer of the season. Huber's homer came moments after a hit-by-pitch was overruled by instant replay and returned the husky slugger to the batter's box.
UConn extended its lead to 4-0 on a Matt Garbowski single to end Kleinsorge's afternoon. Anthony Watts followed and pitched into the fifth inning but was replaced by Tommy Steier after the first two men reached in the fifth inning. Both inherited runners ended up scoring, as did one more as the Huskies moved in front 7-0 at the game's midway point. The Huskies scored single tallies in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, as well.
The Bluejays were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning, triggering the BIG EAST's run-rule. Mere seconds earlier, Georgetown induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play to seal the regular-season title for Connecticut.
Devin Kirby (6-1) picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief after UConn starter Ian Cooke was injured in warmups prior to the bottom of the third inning. Kirby and three others pitched around five walks and a hit batsmen to secure their third shutout win of the season. Five Huskies had multiple hits, led for Garbowski's 3-for-4 day at the plate that included four RBI.
Kleinsorge (1-4), the first of five Bluejay pitchers, was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs in 3.1 innings. CU managed three hits in the game, one each by Andrew Meggs, Colby Canales and Ben North.
Creighton finishes Ed Servais' 20th season at the helm with a 25-24 mark (10-11 BIG EAST), while UConn (40-13, 15-5 BIG EAST) clinched back-to-back 40-win seasons for the first time in program history with today's victory.
Following the game, Creighton recognized seniors Sterling Hayes, Andrew Meggs, Ben Gbur, Tommy Steier, Ryan Windham, Tyler Lozano, Paul Bergstrom, Justin Kleinsorge, Marc Lidd and Zach Reynolds.
