Softball Falls to Nevada, 9-0, in Libby Matson Tournament Opener

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Creighton softball team dropped a 9-0 decision to Nevada in their first game of the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 6-3 on the year, while Nevada improved to 10-3 following a pair of wins on Friday.
The Wolf Pack took an early lead over the Bluejays in the bottom half of the first inning. Following a two-out single through the left side by Bridgette Gilliano, graduate student Taryn Jenkins blasted a two-run home run to left center to give Nevada a 2-0 lead.
Nevada would add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs to take a 4-0 edge in the game. Charli Hawkins launched a two-out solo home run to left center, before Maile Olsen singled and came around to score on an RBI triple by Madison Clark.
The Wolf Pack extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating two additional runs on a sacrifice fly from Jenkins and an RBI single down the left field line by Gabby Herrera to push the advantage to 6-0.
Nevada tacked on three runs in the sixth inning as Haley Painter hit a three-run home run to right to secure the 9-0 victory.
Senior Cayla Nielsen led the Bluejay offense with a pair of hits, including a double, while sophomore Lily West collected Creighton's only other hit.
Sophomore Natalia Puchino suffered her first loss of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. Brooklyn Patchen saw her first action as a Bluejays, allowing five runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
Nevada collected 12 hits on the day as eight different Wolf Pack players recorded at least one hit. Blake Craft recorded the win, tossing the three-hit complete game shutout.
Creighton returns to action at 6:45 p.m. when they take on host Pacific in a contest broadcasted on ESPN+.
