
Men’s Tennis Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss at Drake

DES MOINES, IOWA -- The Creighton men's tennis team battled back from an early 3-1 deficit to level the match at 3-3, but the comeback fell just short as Drake secured a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Bluejays fell to 5-3 on the year following the loss, while the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 overall.
Creighton opened the match with a 6-3 victory on the No. 3 doubles court by Yuma Daijima and Alejandro Gandini. Drake would then answer with a 7-5 win at the No. 2 doubles position and a 7-6 victory at the top doubles position to claim the first point of the match.
Drake would extend their lead out to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-sets win on the No. 5 singles court before Creighton would get on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-sets win on the No. 2 singles court by Matthew Lanahan.
The Bulldogs would answer yet again with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the top singles position to push the advantage out to 3-1.
Creighton showed know quit and clawed their way back into the match, evening the score at 3-3 following a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at the No. 3 singles spot by Zachary Kuo and a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 three-set triumph by Daijima.
With the match coming down to the final singles match, Drake's Markus Bolin claimed a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Gandini to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.
"It was a great effort by our team today," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "This was as close as we have come to upsetting Drake. Our biggest challenge remains keeping our focus on our improvement."
The Bluejays will return to the court at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 10 when they battle Montana State at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
