Omaha, Neb. -- The mild temperatures of March saw flashes of thunder from the Creighton lineup as the Bluejays defeated UMass Lowell 12-2 on Tuesday, March 5 in Creighton's home opener at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
The victory pushed the Bluejays to an 8-1 start, while the River Hawks fell to 3-8.
Down 2-0 as the Bluejays came to the plate in the bottom of the first, Creighton wasted no time getting on the board. Lead off man Tate Gillen drew a walk, followed by a double from junior Nolan Sailors to put runners at second and third, then junior Teddy Deters lined a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 2-1 contest.
Stymied briefly the Bluejays got a one-out double in the second from grad transfer Matt Scherrman, a walk to freshman Connor Capece and an RBI single from Gillen knotted the game at 2-2. Sailors followed with a rocket that left the yard in right, giving the Jays a 5-2 edge.
Creighton added two more runs in the third on a sac fly from Capece and scored the second run on a double steal, then tacked on a run in the sixth via an RBI single from sophomore Ben North.
The final at bat for the Bluejays saw North deliver his third grand slam of the season, just nine games old, blasting a ball out to left center to give Creighton the 12-2 advantage.
North and Sailors combined to finish 5-for-7 with eight RBI and three runs scored.
Senior Tommy Lamb got the win (1-0) with four innings of scoreless relief, while River Hawk starter Jacob Jette took the loss (0-1). Jette allowed five runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Creighton and UMass Lowell conclude their two-game set on Wednesday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m.
