KENNESAW, Ga. – The Creighton softball team manufactured 20 runs on 19 hits to sweep day two of the Kennesaw State Tournament. The Bluejays rolled to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Northern Kentucky, before hanging on for a 10-8 win over host Kennesaw State on Saturday at Bailey Park in Kennesaw, Ga.
The pair of wins lifted the Bluejays overall record to 6-3, while Northern Kentucky fell to 5-3 and Kennesaw State dropped to 2-6 overall.
GAME 1, Creighton 10, Northern Kentucky 0 (5 innings)
In game one, Creighton scored early and often, plating five runs in the first, four in the second and one more in the third on the way to a 10-0 run-rule victory.
Graduate transfer Hannah Poole started things off with an infield single, before back-to-back singles from junior Lily West and sophomore Sydney Potter loaded the bases. Redshirt Freshman Kenzie Nakasawa then drew a bases loaded walk to put the Bluejays on the scoreboard. Junior Erika Perez followed with a grand slam home run to left to give Creighton an early 5-0 lead.
After sophomore Brooke Shifflett struck out the side in the top half of the second, the Bluejays got right back to work, plating four runs on two hits and an error to take a 9-0 lead. Sophomore Ashten Pierson led off the frame with a single, before the Bluejays loaded the bases once again on a walk to Sydra Seville and a Norse throwing error.
West then delivered a two-run single to left to push the Jays advantage out to 7-0. Three straight walks following an RBI groundout by Nakasawa, plated an addition run as the Jays took a 9-0 lead into the third inning.
Creighton would tack on an insurance run in the bottom half of the third as Poole came around to score on an RBI double by Nakasawa.
Shifflett and freshman Abby Rusher limited the Norse to just two hits over the final three innings, as the Bluejays secured the victory.
Poole and West led the Bluejays offense with two hits apiece, while Perez and Nakasawa combined to drive in six of the Bluejays 10 runs. Shifflett improved to 3-1 on the year firing 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, while Rusher delivered 1.1 scoreless innings of relief in the win.
GAME 2: Creighton 10, Kennesaw State 8
Game two saw the Bluejays continue right where they left off in game one. Creighton scored five in the first, one in the second, fourth and sixth, before capping things off with two runs in the seventh on the way to a 10-8 victory.
The Jays soared out to a 2-0 lead three batters into the games as West laced her first triple of the season into the right center field gap, scoring Seville and Poole from second and third. West then came in to score on a wild pitch, before a two-run double from Perez extended CU's advantage to 5-0.
Creighton added a run in the second on the first of two RBI doubles from Potter, as the Bluejays lead ballooned to 6-0 after two complete innings.
Kennesaw State, however, cut the deficit to two, scoring four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the third, before the Bluejays responded with another run in the fourth on another Owls error to make the score 7-4.
A bases loaded walk by Ava Strickland cut the deficit to 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but once again Creighton answered with back-to-back doubles from Perez and junior Ella Dalton to regain a three-run advantage in the sixth.
The Jays then tacked on two addition runs and took a 10-5 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Potter.
Kennesaw State, however, would not go away, blasting a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, before Rusher closed the door on the 10-8 victory for the Bluejays.
