Portland, Ore. -- Putting the first six hitters of the game on safely, Creighton Baseball struck early with three runs in the first, then broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the ninth to defeat Portland 6-3 on Saturday, February 22.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 3-3 on the season, while the Pilots fell to 2-5 overall.
Creighton began the game lightening hot as Tate Gillen, Teddy Deters, Nolan Sailors and Will MacLean all delivered singles. Sailors and MacLean earned an RBI to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead. Nate McHugh and Kyle Hess were plunked with the Hess HBP forcing home Sailors and extending Creighton's edge to 3-0.
Portland drew closer with a pair of runs in the fifth as the Pilots took advantage of some fielding miscues by the Bluejays. The inning began with consecutive singles by Portland's Jonas Salk and Tyler Howard. After making a diving stop on the ball hit by Howard, Creighton shortstop Ben North threw wildly past first, followed by a throw from first baseman Will MacLean that went into the Pilots' dugout allowing both base runners to score.
Facing Bluejay closer Garrett Langrell, Portland leader Brady Bean blasted a solo home run to left field to knot the game at 3-3. While rounding first base Bean and MacLean exchanged a few words that made an impact in the ninth.
In the final frame Creighton got a leadoff single from Matt Scherrman. With two down in the inning, Pilot shortstop Frankie Rutigliano threw wild to first on a ball off the bat of Nolan Sailors. The error gave Creighton a 4-3 edge. MacLean followed with some insurance by launching an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall to put the Bluejays up 6-3.
Langrell picked up the win (1-0), allowing one run on two hits and two strikeouts over two innings of work. Portland reliever Kaden Segel took the loss (0-1), allowing three unearned runs on four hits over 6.2 innings.
Creighton and Portland wrap up the four-game series on Sunday, February 23 with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. (CT).
