Baseball Defeats Charleston 8-6 in Series Opener

The victory moved the Bluejays to 4-3 on the season, while Charleston fell to 6-3.
Creighton bounced out to a 3-0 in the top of the first, doing all the damage after two men were out. Nolan Sailors got things going, then MacLean worked a walk and Kyle Hess was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ben North cashed in the opportunity with a three-run double off the left-center field wall.
Charleston answered with a solo home run by Avery Neeves in the first and two runs in the second, including an RBI single by Neeves. The Cougar lead off hitter continued to be a thorn for the Bluejays by working an RBI walk in the fourth to put Charleston up 4-3.
The Creighton bats went back to work in the fifth as Teddy Deters and Sailors reached via infield singles, setting MacLean up to blast a ball out to right-center to put Creighton up 6-4.
An RBI triple from Tate Gillen in the sixth made it 7-4, followed by a sacrifice fly from Deters to push the Bluejay lead to 8-4.
After reliever Matt Aukerman retired nine straight in the middle of the contest, Charleston finally plated a pair in the seventh. Creighton closer Garrett Langrell slammed the door by stranding two in the seventh and picked up his second save of the season with a scoreless final two frames.
Aukerman earned the win (2-0) allowing two runs on four hits in 3.2 innings, while Charleston starter Jake Brink took the loss (2-1) surrendering six runs on five hits over four plus innings.
Sailors led the Bluejay offense with three hits in the contest.
Creighton and Charleston resume the series on Saturday, March 1 at 12:00 pm (CT).
