Series History: First Meeting
The weekend series with College of Charleston will be the first time the Bluejays and Cougars have met.
Scouting the Bluejays
(2025: 3-3, 0-0 BIG EAST)
After ending their opening weekend series on a high note with a 17-1 win over Greensboro, the Creighton Bluejays aimed to build on their momentum as they traveled to Portland, Oregon, to face the Portland Pilots.
Beginning the weekend with a double header, Creighton went 1-1 on the day, defeating the Pilots 5-2 in the first game before dropping the second in a close 10-9 loss.
Bouncing back on Saturday, Feb. 22, the Bluejays struck early by getting their first six hitters on base and closing out the game late with three runs for a 6-3 victory over Portland.
Nolan Sailors led the team in Creighton's 6-3 victory with two runs and two hits for the afternoon. The senior holds a
team-high eight hits in 26 at-bats.
Shea Wendt, Ian Kooseman and Wilson Magers are expected to fill out the Bluejay rotation this weekend. Magers was the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week during the opening weekend.
Scouting the Cougars
(2025: 6-2, 0-0 CAA)
After opening the season with a 10-0 shutout against Virginia Commonwealth University, the Cougars split the next two games in high-scoring fashion. Following their opening series, University of Charleston emerged victorious in five of their next six contests, outscoring their opponents 33-18.
The only game University of Charleston dropped came against Seton Hall, 8-5, in the closing game of the Cougars' home series with the Pirates on Feb. 23.
Senior outfielder Dariyan Pendergrass leads the Cougar roster with a .571 batting average, starting all eight games. Junior first baseman Payton Frehner tallied a .394 batting average, while racking up nine runs, 13 hits and eight RBI for the team.
On the mound, junior Jake Brink and senior Aidan Hunter are each responsible for two of the Cougars' wins this season. Both pitchers hold a WHIP of 0.77 in the early season.
Langrell Emerging as Bluejays' Closer
Just six games into his Creighton career, Garrett Langrell, a graduate transfer from Eastern Kentucky, has already made his mark on two of Creighton's three victories early in the season.
The right-handed pitcher earned a save in Creighton's first of two games against Portland on Feb. 21, securing the Bluejays' 5-2 victory. Â
The next day, Langrell claimed his first win in the white and blue pitching against the Pilots in their 6-3 victory. The transfer recorded two strikeouts in two innings pitched, allowing a solo home run in the eighth before nailing down the win in the ninth.
His performances against Portland earned the transfer a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Weather Has Altered All Seven Games in 2025
Baseball in the early portion of the season is a constant battle with weather, but the 2025 season is coming out of the box cold. In each of the opening two series weather concerns have forced a doubleheader to be played on Friday, then impacted the time in the other two played contests. The only cancelation to this point was the series finale at Portland.
