CONWAY, S.C. – Sophomore Sydney Potter's walk-off two-run home run in the eighth inning lifted the Creighton softball team past Purdue Fort Wayne, 4-3, on Sunday morning in the finale of the Kickin' Chicken Classic in Conway, S.C.
With the win, Creighton improved to 3-2 on the year, while Purdue Fort Wayne dropped to 1-4 overall.
Potter, who finished the game with just the one hit and two RBI, delivered the late inning heroics and became the first Bluejays to hit a walk-off home run since Emma Rosonke vs. Abilene Christian on Feb. 13, 2022.
After a scoreless first inning, Purdue Fort Wayne dented the scoreboard first when Alexa Carter lined an RBI double into the right center field gap to give the Mastadon's a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays answered against Purdue Fort Wayne starter Alanah Jones in the fifth as sophomore Lynn Davis singled and came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by junior Lily West and an RBI single from senior Sydra Seville.
Knotted at 1-1, Creighton took its first lead of the contest in the sixth when junior Ashley Smetter delivered a pinch-hit single to right and later scored on an RBI single by junior Erika Perez to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead.
Down to their final three outs, Purdue Fort Wayne used a walk by Carter and a single from McKenna Minton to place a runner in scoring position before an RBI double to right by Grace Hollopeter leveled the contest at 2-2 and forced extra innings.
The Mastadon's struck first in the top of the eighth as Kennedy Peckinpaugh delivered an RBI single up the middle to give PFW a 3-2 lead.
Purdue Fort Wayne looked to have sealed the win, but with two-out and down to their final strike in the bottom half of the eight, Potter launched a two-run home run to straight away center to lift the Bluejays to the 4-3 win.
Sophomore Brooklyn Patchen earned the win after tossing 1.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Sophomore Brooke Shifflett earned the start and first 4.0 innings of two hit ball with three strikeouts.
Jones was the hard-luck loser, falling to 0-4 on the year after allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work.
Creighton returns to the field next weekend when they travel to Kennesaw, Ga. to open play at the Kennesaw State Tournament on Feb. 14 against Northern Kentucky at 9 a.m. Central.
